I liked how FFXI's Auctionhouse worked with it's bids. It was almost a little meta game in itself if you knew how to work it properly. You could make quite a lot of money playing the market.

You don't need market gimmicks like that to "play the market".

Indeed, the very fact that there is an argument on this topic is a strong indicator that some people "get it", conceptually, while others are "getting it", rectally.

People that ask for a blind bidding auction house are the lazy ones. They want to dump items on the AH for prices that are higher than the fair market value and hope that someone else is too lazy to bid incrementally. Ultimately, undercutting still happens (it did in FFXI) and the savvy shopper will always end up buying the item listed below market value.

The converse argument can be made. Crafters can bitch that a blind system screws them over because other players "blindly bid" the going market rate and the prices of materials never fall because no one is smart enough to underbid. Next thing you know, we have a thread about "lazy players" that don't start bidding low and work up, and the prices stagnate at some artificially high price. Theory of course, because prices would fall anyways; that is the nature of a free market.

Econ 101 is now in session. Please pay $40 for your lessons.
Now reverse the graph and you have whats happening in game.

Really, everyone pointing out that its just S&D is as wrong as everyone saying they're getting anything for free by doing it themselves.

You, sir, are the one that is mistaken. If there is no value in someone listing the item for 1 gil, then they will not list it. Someone is making a profit, directly or otherwise, and your failure to comprehend the nature of their actions does not make supply and demand any less valid.

If anything, you all should be elated that this is happening. If the price of everything drops, maybe players will stop buying gil and RMT will go away. I mean, why would someone in the market of selling gil for real world currency be trying to DROP the prices in game? That is counter-productive. I think you need to rethink who is actually listing this stuff for 1 gil.

I think that, out of pure spite, I'll start selling all my philosophy tomestone purchases for 10K a pop... 40-50K below market price. Just to troll. I'll still be making a profit anyways. Added effect: watching the world burn. I mean, I gotta be true to my namesake and all.

Are you kidding me? Supply and demand does not ignore profit or the market the product its aimed at, why in hell do people sell stuff for 1gil in AH when it sells for 3 gil in vendor and with NO TAX! There is no supply and demand here just blind undercutting! You all can wail your arms around and have a party and say everything is ok but do not come back later when all of your time spend crafting amounts to no value at the end of the trip cause you asked for it.

That's cool, ill come around buy them off , re-sell them for the appropriate amount and make a profit off you. You get your sense of blind achievement for pissing off strangers and I get the real money.

This is how a free market works. Jesus man what is wrong with people on this game.

Next thing you know you will be telling SE they have to buy your items because other people won't.
Exactly ... if too many people are selling Item X, then people need to sell Item Y. High demand mats/products will see the most fiercest competition. But there's niche markets as well as other areas where you could potentially corner a market. Making stuff is only half the game and as it should be. Selling should be as much work, if not more, considering the potential to take in a lot more gil than what went in originally.

Umm... the FFXI system was no different. The undercutting was horrible... you just didn't know someone was undercutting you until it was too late. Transparency is much better.

Undercutting is all great until people start selling things at a loss. The Ilvl 70 gear is selling for a loss along with a few other items which makes the crafters that can make these items not want to make them resulting in a strange dry but cheap market.
