Some of those mobs are for quests as well. I was on a lowbie caster last night and needed to kill 6 black sheep for my quest. Took me over half hour to get 6 because people were farming them for fleece.

I know its annoying when you come across people like that, but remember too that as long as you do something like30 or 40% of the damage to a beasties - even if someone else tagged it first - you will receive credit/quest items/etc from it ( and the person who tagged it does too ).
It gets annoying tho when its a higher lvl character farming inconsiderately like that. I know ive even asked in all forms of chat if I could have a few cuz its just for a quest then id be on my way, but x_x they just ignored me. but I eventually got what I needed using the damage-tagged mobs tactic, tho it took longer to succeed :P
I would have /laugh at them

When I'm farming something that's a quest mob and I see a lower level player come along killing them, I'll send them a tell and ask if they want to PT. I'll claim so I can get the drop and they'll get credit for the kill for the quest. If you cooperate you can both benefit.
Ahh, the rose-tinted glasses of hindsight.. 5.5 years EQ1 here, and yes that was the norm. However, don't forget the downsides:
- Walk into endgame area. "Camp check", [see responses, and check for liars], "Well damn, I guess everything worth doing is taken."
- Need something specific? Talk to the people there, maybe in a few hours a spot will open. If they don't have friends ready to invite instead.
- Good group, start out covering the area "traditionally" done by 2 camps. People come in later thinking that since not a 2nd group they should make one. Attempting to muscle one another out occurs.
And don't forget the important ways games have changed since then:
- now instances grant everyone a copy of top content
- granting rewards for a kill based on better criteria: here it's 1st to tag and some opportunities to share XP, EQ1 you could have a long fight largely dead and someone with more DPS comes to take it from you.
Company then, and every MMO company since, has largely taken the view that nothing belongs to anyone until granted by a game mechanic. And if it's granted by a game mechanic, then it's pretty much impossible to steal. Best solution far as I've seen. For the OP, that's just poor folk in denial and/or trying to psych their way into something they don't deserve.

Had the same problem trying to get some Banemite kills for Hunting Log...
Sounds like they're adding more mobs and increasing respawn rate though so hopefully that'll help.
It would help mitigate the problem a little if people didn't just butt heads so much. First tag gets full credit, otherwise it is given out by % contribution. So whoever hits it first doesn't kill it and that mob counts as two. These farming groups tag as fast as they can to 'claim' it and then burn the mobs down as fast as they can. I suppose many people don't understand the mechanics.
Power rules in the end though. Someone can try to push you off your little 'camp' as much as they want, but they can't PvP you if you ignore them. They can't do a damned thing. Learn to use the mechanics to your benefit. And tomorrow there will be more spawning grounds too.
Seeing as how I've been farming Diremite Web pretty strongly the past few weeks to pad my gil-pouch...First tag gets full credit, otherwise it is given out by % contribution. Tag the mob ASAP as only first tag gets credit for item drops (as far as I've seen.)
Burn mobs down as fast as possible to get them to respawn faster.
Time it so they come up in a pattern that lets you tag them as soon as the first one drops, meaning better control on everything.
I personally don't care, so long as I get the first hit in and others don't disrupt the spawn pattern too much.
as I was saying above, doing a certain amount of damage to a monster even if u weren't the one to tag it can grant u the quest items...but I don't know if that is true also for regular loot items from the monster. probly not, but I know for certain it counts for quest items and kill credit ^_^Seeing as how I've been farming Diremite Web pretty strongly the past few weeks to pad my gil-pouch...
