EDITED TO HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT POINTS
Taken straight from the top of Gamespot's text review:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/final...%3Bread-review
The Bad
-Absolutely miserable interface ???(Why)
-Does a poor job of communicating important information (Hand Holding Required? Or is it fun to discover)
-Limited questing means you're always looking for something fun to do (Story Quests Added, more on the way)
-Everything about the economy stinks (Economy still needs to be tweaked, yes. The real market structure is awesome) -Every aspect of the game is filled with dumb obstacles. (Statement doesn't make sense)-slow anima regeneration (Running within city states is easy)-lack of mounts (Running within City States is easy)-confusing account management (Crysta or Credit Card? 2 choices is confusing?)
-annoying outside game config (Double click, set graphical settings, click ok. done)
-dependence on text macros (Macros not required, Programming Macros is Easy and beneficial though)
-manual configuration of gamepads (Custom Configuration of Gamepads)
-lack of convenient UI features (Easy to navigate UI)
-game soundtrack on endless repeat (.....)
-cookie cutter environments (Looks amazing)
-lack of auto follow. (??? Auto Follow has always worked)
GameSpy:
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/square-enix...1127142p1.html
-Attacks and damage being out of sync during combat (True, although doesn't alter gameplay)
-Crafting is a chore through multiple menus (Fixed, crafting is awesome now)
-Lack of intuitive navigation of features (What is this person asking for exactly?? Auto navigation of Menus?)
-No mail system (True)
-Grinding (All MMO's have grinding, farming, Leveling)
....and all of the above has never been mentioned in detail by the dev team. (Most have already been addressed)IGN review:
http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1123824p1.html
Criticism:
-Storyline missions too spaced out (True, being addressed already though)
-Levequests lose their appeal after a while (How long is a while? Like 7 months?)
-Dull grind (All Grinding is dull)
-Too many submenus (Already been updated with UI patches)
-Useless map (Map is amazing now)
-Poor PC optimization (True. being addressed though. About the same as Rift)
-Lack of mounts (True)
As we can see in yet another case, Yoshi-P has effectively ignored the criticism above, and focused all of the team's effort on changing, nullifying, or ignoring the only things about the game that were praised. (Not True. All patches so far have addressed these aspects of the game)Don't forget guys. That more changes are taking effect before the start of summer.PC Gamer:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/10/18/fi...sy-xiv-review/
Criticism:
-Lag issues (Yes there is lag in some areas)
-Framerate dips (Yes the FPS does dip, Anything above 30 FPS is not visibe to the eye)
-Nightmarish UI (UI is nice now, very FFish)
-No PVP (Final Fantasy title... PVP?!?!)
-No auction house (Market is very nice now)
-No sensible fast travel system that doesn't break your bank (Traveling doesn't cost GIL, what does this mean?)
-Very hard to just buy a sword in the game (You start with gear for whatever class you choose)
-High failure rate of crafting (Crafting is easy while doing a recipe within you rank. There is risk in doing otherwise)
-Long timer on guildleves (So?, leve ends when you complete the task)
-Dull grind (Again, grinding is dull)
-Fatigue (Of course Leveling needs to be limited)
RPGfan:
http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Final_...XIV/index.html
Criticism:
-Only five zones (what does this mean? for each State there is about 12 zones)
-Underutilized zones (True, not everyone is at all the R40 zones)
-Copy/pasting (Graphics are amazing)
-Long load times (No load time to enter quests cities. Other than starting the game up)
-Soundtrack wearing out its welcome (???)
-Non-user friendly UI (Amazing UI now)
-Lag between UI menu selections (Barely noticeable)
-Cumbersome sheathing/unsheathing of weapons (Active/Inactive? What's the issue?)
-Movement speed reduced while weapon unsheathed (There are skills to reduce this, what's the issue?)
-Frozen in place while sheathing weapon (Yeah, of course)
-Needless deaths from complicated sheathing mechanics (why would you put your weapon away during battle?!?!)
-Need to unsheathe weapon for casting buffs (Yeah, it's called your wand)
-UI tedium (???)
-Guildleves seem like cheap, uncompelling content (More content added and is being added)
-Fatigue system (please see above)
-Game tries to keep you away from playing it (This doesn't make sense)
-Elemental instability in crafting makes your items explode and you lose materials (Yeah, of coure it does, it's called skill)
-Market wards crashing (The market is amazing now)
-Standing still during combat (Ranged and Mages do, Melee has to avoid attacks)
Alot has happened since initial release. The new Dev Team is doing a great job on addressing many of the issues. Alot of the previous issues have already been addressed. Cheers

You know what's brave? Diving into shark infested waters with open wounds all over you. That doesn't make it a good idea.
You're worse than SE at giving meaningless vague statements. Except regarding criticisms more highly (which seems kinda unnecessary to tell them ,theyre already overhauling the battle system/ui/crafting etc), it's just empty space.Build upon the idea of freedom, dev team.
-Be brave and strike out into uncharted waters.
-Let the (perhaps frightened) return to defined classes and typical MMO activities be a stepping stone on the path of innovation.
-Bring Tanaka's vision back. Accept the praise given to FFXIV and build upon it.
-Move these reviewer's criticisms to the top of your priority list.
-Don't be afraid
-Be a market leader, not a market peer
Obviously reviewers didnt get that far in the game and at face-value its a good system. The deeper in you get, the more bland it gets as everyone pretty mergers into two classes; the caster and the melee.
While I Think Tanaka failed the OP is right. There are some parts of the game that are terrible and their changes should have been priority one and some that just needed improvement. For some reason Yoshi-P is going for changes to things we can live with instead changing the horrible things about this game first.
This. The system requirements are ridiculous, but they should have expected a limited audience because of it, and I am sure they did expect it. However, with the release on the PS3, hopefully this will change. I know for a fact that when XI was released on the PS2 there were thousands of new players because of the counsel. Hopefully the same will happen with XIV if the team can successfully fix the game.
I, for one, welcome our new Yoshi-P-led overlords.
I have seen nothing but good things come out of the team since the leadership change, and I believe the game can go from strength-to-strength between now and the PS3 launch.
It is my opinion that the development team are doing what is right for the game, and that is listening to the actual player-base, and not some two-bit reviewers.
Just posting the obvious. Since Neptune posted with the Reviews, that none of the important issues had been addressed, I felt that it was important to show that it was entirely false on 90% of the information. Don't want anyone thinking about playing this game to get the wrong idea because of a bunch of old Reviews. Correct me if I'm wrong though Demacia, please do.
Edited: Aside from Auto-Attack, Tanaka's Vision had just been improved upon. The main point being that the Armory System and Class System are going to be improved by the addtion of Specialized Jobs running in paralell with this system.

Gladly.
The Bad
-Absolutely miserable interface ???(Why) ALL interaction through main menus, no shortcuts, no convenience, few text commands, etc.
-Does a poor job of communicating important information (Hand Holding Required? Or is it fun to discover) Not much to say here. I'm in favor of figuring things out on your own.
-Limited questing means you're always looking for something fun to do (Story Quests Added, more on the way) This is in reference to guildleve timers, although the questing is still limited and there is still nothing to do.
-Everything about the economy stinks (Economy still needs to be tweaked, yes. The real market structure is awesome) Everything about the economy indeed stinks. Gil is practically worthless and the market wards are cumbersome.
-Every aspect of the game is filled with dumb obstacles. (Statement doesn't make sense) Makes perfect sense. Confirmation menus everywhere, BRs halting combat, inviting/kicking LS members, I could go on.
-slow anima regeneration (Running within city states is easy)Teleporting everywhere is bad to begin with.
-lack of mounts (Running within City States is easy) No excuse for a lack of mounts at this stage in the game.
-confusing account management (Crysta or Credit Card? 2 choices is confusing?)Not much of an issue but most people don't really want to hand their information out to some no-name company
-annoying outside game config (Double click, set graphical settings, click ok. done) Most PC games have config menus accessible ingame
-dependence on text macros (Macros not required, Programming Macros is Easy and beneficial though) I wish this were true. Macros in this game are awful compared to XI's
-manual configuration of gamepads (Custom Configuration of Gamepads) Stupid complaint by stupid reviewer I'd say
-lack of convenient UI features (Easy to navigate UI) No menu shortcuts, no seperate windows, it's easy to navigate but not convenient to use at ALL.
-game soundtrack on endless repeat (.....)
-cookie cutter environments (Looks amazing) Nothing amazing about constantly repeating features and endless mole caves.
-lack of auto follow. (??? Auto Follow has always worked) Another retard reviewer comment. Auto-follow has always been there, that's true
GameSpy:
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/square-enix...1127142p1.html
-Attacks and damage being out of sync during combat (True, although doesn't alter gameplay) Yes, input lag does indeed alter gameplay.
-Crafting is a chore through multiple menus (Fixed, crafting is awesome now) Awesome is an overstatement
-Lack of intuitive navigation of features (What is this person asking for exactly?? Auto navigation of Menus?) MAYBE SOME MENU SHORTCUTS? CHRIST. Can't hit CTRL+E to open up an equipment tab I have to do it all through the main menu. Can't type /sea all to search for players I have to use a retarded party interface that only JPs use for LS stuff.
-No mail system (True)
-Grinding (All MMO's have grinding, farming, Leveling)
....and all of the above has never been mentioned in detail by the dev team. (Most have already been addressed)
IGN review:
http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1123824p1.html
Criticism:
-Storyline missions too spaced out (True, being addressed already though) Since when?
-Levequests lose their appeal after a while (How long is a while? Like 7 months?) Try one month. It's all the same shit and the worst part is that they make up for 95% of the game's content.
-Dull grind (All Grinding is dull) Not all grinding is dull, however it is in this case.
-Too many submenus (Already been updated with UI patches)
-Useless map (Map is amazing now) Basic features = AMAZING?!
(Not True. All patches so far have addressed these aspects of the game)

Criticism:
-Lag issues (Yes there is lag in some areas)
-Framerate dips (Yes the FPS does dip, Anything above 30 FPS is not visibe to the eye)
-Nightmarish UI (UI is nice now, very FFish) UI is not nice by modern standards. Hell it isn't nice by ancient standards.
-No PVP (Final Fantasy title... PVP?!?!) UH OH! PvP?! NO WAY! I'll take fighting dumb AI over a human opponent that can actually adapt and think for themselves any day!
-No auction house (Market is very nice now) Just because it has search doesn't mean it's good. Still a time-waster and a terrible idea to begin with.
-No sensible fast travel system that doesn't break your bank (Traveling doesn't cost GIL, what does this mean?) Not sure what this means either.
-Very hard to just buy a sword in the game (You start with gear for whatever class you choose) Believe it or not, people have to get new weapons eventually.
-High failure rate of crafting (Crafting is easy while doing a recipe within you rank. There is risk in doing otherwise)
-Long timer on guildleves (So?, leve ends when you complete the task) 36 hours.
-Dull grind (Again, grinding is dull)
-Fatigue (Of course Leveling needs to be limited) No it fucking doesn't, am I being trolled?
RPGfan:
http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Final_...XIV/index.html
Criticism:
-Only five zones (what does this mean? for each State there is about 12 zones) What game are you playing? There are 5 zones. 5 huge boring repetitive zones.
-Underutilized zones (True, not everyone is at all the R40 zones)
-Copy/pasting (Graphics are amazing) Way to just ignore this point with "HURR DURR GRAPHICS = GOOD ENVIRONMENT
-Long load times (No load time to enter quests cities. Other than starting the game up)
-Soundtrack wearing out its welcome (???) It's suggesting the soundtrack is ass, and I have to agree.
-Non-user friendly UI (Amazing UI now) Yep, definitely being trolled.
-Lag between UI menu selections (Barely noticeable) Very noticeable.
-Cumbersome sheathing/unsheathing of weapons (Active/Inactive? What's the issue?) The issue is that you have to drop what you're doing and stand still to do it.
-Movement speed reduced while weapon unsheathed (There are skills to reduce this, what's the issue?)
-Frozen in place while sheathing weapon (Yeah, of course)
-Needless deaths from complicated sheathing mechanics (why would you put your weapon away during battle?!?!)
-Need to unsheathe weapon for casting buffs (Yeah, it's called your wand) Yeah, it's called a shitty mechanic. Shouldn't need to be in active mode to cast spells or use abilities.
-UI tedium (???) The UI is tedious????????????
-Guildleves seem like cheap, uncompelling content (More content added and is being added) Doesn't stop guildleves from being cheap, uncompelling content.
-Fatigue system (please see above)
-Game tries to keep you away from playing it (This doesn't make sense) Gee, I finished all my guildleves and I'm fatigued, since I can't really fucking do anything I might as well go play a game that isn't horrible.
-Elemental instability in crafting makes your items explode and you lose materials (Yeah, of coure it does, it's called skill) woo mash standard craft.
-Market wards crashing (The market is amazing now) No.
-Standing still during combat (Ranged and Mages do, Melee has to avoid attacks) Uh oh, the gnat is doing its predictable teleport-> beam I better run 5 feet to the right.
