Our characters are evil, main quest proves it.

MAIN QUEST SPOILERS!!! Dont read if you havent finnished.

    ...

Whats up with saving Thancred but not Gaius? We just left him to die ffs! Gaius is clearly not an evil person because despite his actions - he genuinely feels that the empire ruling Eorzea is better for us. In his mind he is helping us - he even say this to our character.

From a consequentialistic and utilitarian moral philosophy standpoint - Gaius is a decent man trying to do good. He is from an ethical perspective - a good person.

And what does our character do? LEAVE HIM FOR DEAD. But hey, lets save Thancred.

Leaving Gaius to die just shows we are not better than them. First I cant join Gaius, then I must leave him behind lol.

    Well. Guess thats it. Thoughts?

Saving a friend over somebody who held our other friends hostage for their gain is being evil? lol. Yes while Gaius had good intentions, the same as us mind you, the Garlean's way to execute it was vastly different. They not only wanted to destroy the primals, they wanted to RULE over us as well (ref. cutscene where the GC leaders are discussing the matter at hand.) Therefore, we aren't the evil ones

Going back on what I said, a thought occurred to me. Gaius was probably using the excuse of destroying the primals (and holding the scions hostage) as an excuse to get us to bow down to them

OP is right that we are the evil ones, though his argument doesn't prove it. I believe there was a posting by someone on this board describing this. I'll post it here when I find it Anyway, Supposedly, as the Lore goes, the Ascians and the primals were on the planet first. Hydaelyn came later, almost as an intruder to the planet, and screwed everything over after her arrival. The Ascians are presumably trying to put things back to how they were before the giant crystal came and took their world away from them. Hydaelyn calls upon us to keep the Ascians from taking their planet back and turning everything back to a time before she arrived.

I really hope that Gaius survived, though given the scale of the explosion that he was caught up in it's unlikely. I agree, though - I sympathised with the Garlean Empire much more than I did the Scions or the people of Eorzea.

Gaius shot and badly injured my Path Companion in 1.0. The Empire overran my character's hometown (Ala Mhigo) when she was a little girl and which Gaius now rules with an iron fist. No sympathy for the devil from me.

I figured that out from the cutscene at the beginning of the first Ifirit fight. "You've already been claimed by another", hence why you're protected from being touched. Though I don't think "evil" is quite the appropriate word, in a few other games there is a "call from the darkside." "Evil" means to enjoy causing suffering. The Empire was hellbent on doing that. You could argue our characters are causing suffering to the empire, but they were already suffering BY the empire.

Basically at that point in the Ifirit cutscene I was like "well, we're the pawns of another primal-god-thing"

Also if you know your FF lore, particularly FF6. Think about it. Nero Tol Scaeva =~ Kefka. Defeat him and he shall grow stronger and come back later in the third act. Or so I think.

Ifrit was just referring to the Echo and how it protects the player from a Primal's influence (because it's come from a power even higher than them, ala, the Mothercrystal). The Echo was given to the player with no evil intent, even if does still make us pawns of a higher power, it's a kind of 'end justifies the means' thing (because the Mothercrystal is the source of all life on the planet, if it was to be destroyed, well, it should be obvious just what a bad idea that would be). And the Echo does prove extremely useful to the player in their travels, so it's not exactly an unwelcome ability to have.

Eorzeans only wanted to be left in peace - the Empire are the ones with delusions of grandeur and are hellbent on planet-wide conquest. So this idea that the Empire are just misguided and that we're the evil ones is not only a rather convoluted, it comes across as more wishful thinking from players who have just spent far too much time playing GTA and want a RPG where they can be the 'bad guy' so to speak, no matter how ridiculous such a concept would be in a FF title.

I dont think that means WE are the bad guys.
If this Eorzea is the original one or not, its not our fault, we are just trying to survive against the ones that want us killed (the Ascians being one of them).
Also, Answers comes from pre Yoshi-P 1.0., we dont know how much the original story has changed since then.

Yeah, empires often believe that they are just helping the poor simple natives of the lands they concur. The bloodshed is for our own good.

I dont think we are the bad guys, the world of Eorzea is a troubled one - the land seems to be constantly at odds with itself on policies of land and power. In the end i think its the forces behind the people that we should be examining closely, namely the Ascions and Hydaelyn (Light and Dark). Now with the new Astral Era i wouldnt be suprised if the 3 city states embark on their own trouble/strife between themselves.
