Except you didn't have a market yet. You had wild speculation inflated by people with illegal gil. You had people with ill-gotten gil spending millions like water, while the legitimate buyer only has around 250k from doing the storyline quests. You didn't have a market then, you do now-now that a significant part of the player base is now 50 and prices are now in psuedo-equilibrium.

Does Ferrari get a credit on their books with a purchase made with counterfeit money? The answer is no, it's a loss.
