Like it or not, Cair is correct. Jobs should not be limited to only one class. Perhaps a limited, logical set of classes, but not just one class.

I think expecting jobs to be able to be used by any class/weapon is very VERY greedy.
Try explaining a Thief using a Great Axe or Polearm. Yeah.
Just wait it out and don't get your panties in a bunch.
"Us heroes, we have so much to do."
The problem ladies and gentlemen ... is Thief. The Thief Job blows apart any attempt to tie a single Armory Class or weapon to unlocking a particular Job.
Watch.
- Monk is unlocked by Pugilist (OK. That makes sense, but what about Thief?)
- Thief is unlocked b Gladiator (Gladiators are the only guys that use daggers. Fine. Then what about Warrior?)
- Warrior is unlocked by Marauder (OK. Then what about Dark Knight?)
- Dark Knight is unlocked by Thaumaturge (Fine, then what about Black Mage?)
- Black Mage is unlocked by Conjurer (Then what about White Mage?)
- err ...
- (... and Paladin, and Red Mage, and ...)
Run it through in your head and you'll see. No matter what jobs you use, as soon as you try to introduce Thief it displaces another traditional Final Fantasy job.
There are only three solutions:
- Scrap the Armory System completely (which very few players want to do).
- Do not have the Thief Job in FFXIV.
- Do not have Job and Armory Classes tie into each other one-to-one.
Since Akihiko Matsui just stated that the Armory System is not being scrapped, that only leaves option #2 and #3. Which of those two option do you think you would prefer, personally? That is the question.
Also you people fail to remember that even if a job IS locked to a class (Ex. Only Gladiators can be Paladins) they can STILL as Gladiators equip abilities from Marauder etc etc.

But who says that a class can only unlock one job? >.>

Your mind is blown.

con has elemental spells
thaum has high dmg
who is the whm? who gets blm? does anyone get rdm?
they could either cut down on the basic jobs, ie no warrior, or thf, or it could be a system where a couple different jobs can unlock/use certain job titles. or one job can unlock multiple jobs.
I think that certain jobs will probably be allowed to equip certain weapons/classes. Like Thieves can only use Daggers, Hand-to-Hand, and Swords, perhaps even Crossbows(Hunter Class [Just using for example]) This would allow a Thief to be a Thief/Gladiator, Thief/Pugilist, Thief/Hunter, etc.

Expecting Thief to be Thief/Any Class does not make sense, however.
