Something about the incoming PvP that really disturbs me. The names. Fresh meat.

But if you don't have a name then that doesn't make it fun either. "YES I JUST BEAT MEAT BAG #1, WHATS UP". "I'm TOTALLY SMASHING ON MEAT BAG #2 *HIGH FIVE*"

Beating a nameless and most likely carbon copy of a class doesn't quite seem like a lot of fun. I equate it to playing against bots in a game with possibly more AI. That's about it.

Except you know that the person is a human. If his name was DEPRDERPFOURTWENTY you still have no idea WHO that is... never will meet them.. maybe never see them again, especially if PvP pulls from multiple servers like Duty Finder does... have no idea it is a real person. Why does it matter if it is Meatbag?

You need a valid point for a reason why you MUST have real names. It's not a MUST.. it's a want... and it doesn't HAVE to be in the game for it to be fun.

The Wolves' Den is duty finder, and comes in lv30/40/50 light and full party flavors. Your chances of meeting the same people more than once will be fairly decent if you queue up with a premade party, mostly because premades will only be matched against other premades.

The fun part is beating the enemy.
You don't need anything else.

The fun is good enough for me too, but some people indifferent or unknowing of PvP need some tantalizing bait to pull them in. If there is no reward, it is hard for anyone to justify playing it regularly in the long term, because their time would be better spent playing content that has the potential to progress their character. With rewards, PvP players will have progression to aim for in PvP, and useable if not weaker stuff for PvE (because PvP gear will contain at least one stat you will have no use for in PvE- morale, which only functions to mitigate damage received from player characters. note that no PvE gear currently in existence has this stat)

One other thing people should remember is one of the primary valuable components of any PvP in an MMORPG is that, especially for hardcore players that conquer new content quickly, it greatly reduces the potential for boredom among people who have "done everything" in the latest patch. If PvP was out now, you'd definitely be seeing less of this.

I also want to point out that in FFXI even though they had terrible PvP in the game they still had tournaments. In those tournaments teams had team names. So hopefully when SE releases PvP they will hold tournaments like they did before and then premade teams can name themselves for a tournament and then you would know which team you were facing at the very least.

I don't think that for solo PvP names are a requirement. I can see in a tournament setting that you would want names and that would be the only exception I can think of for people wanting names. Premades are more hardcore... those players will want to know who they are fighting because the point of a premade is to be competitive. Solo PvP though... no reason for names to be shown... none. People think of solo pvp as PvP with training wheels as it is already.

do all pvpers use retarded names? no, but the VAST majority do.

i'd rather see an arena full of 'Fresh Meat' than an arena full of people with variations of stuff like 'ipwnnoobs' or 'swagkilla' or 'yoloballa'

During beta and testing, devs often put placeholder names on. Im sure this is what that is. Your reading too much into it...

This is very disappointing :C

I am not SUPER into PVP personally, but part of the fun is to make a name for yourself. In a the games that I took part in PVP in, there was always a guild or specific people that had certain reputations, be it one of an amazing PVPer, as the weak link in a specific guild so a good starting point for strategies for taking them down when fighting, as groups that used shady methods to get their wins...etc. But they had their own sense of community and it seemed like it hinged on reputation. Take that away, and the PVP aspect of this game loses a LOT of impact.

And to top it off, I'm starting to get annoyed with the policing of this game with the preemptive measures to prevent people's feelings from getting hurt. I don't understand why at the very least you don't give players the option to toggle these things on or off. For players who don't want to be harassed they can toggle this PVP anonymity option on and be called "Fresh Meat" or "Wandering Summoner 1" or whatnot. For those of us who want our names to be displayed and take pride in our skills and want to build a reputation, we can keep this option off.

Please SE, give us the option to make the choice for ourselves.

As some of you have already mentioned, the reason why we have elected to display the names of your opponents as "Fresh Meat" is to prevent harassment from occurring. We feel this is an important aspect to address to create a fun and comfortable environment for everyone to enjoy PvP.

the "l33t" pvpers who cant grief other players response are like....

the average pvper who doesnt care as we will be too busy targeting and killing the most dangerous players first to worry about other players name are like....

im sorry for this post, but i find all this crying over the title "fresh meat" to be rather funny

Seriously though, this is a horrible decision by SE. I don't understand how they think somebody calling you a noob is going to be more offensive than getting constantly spammed by gold sellers. Might as well remove names for PvE too. Actually, let's just remove the whole chat system so we can protect peoples feelings.
