People say pally instead of PLD?
...that's stupid. That sounds, looks, and functions on a heightened tier of stupidity.

    Its not even shorter.

Terminology is actually pretty important. Being able to clearly communicate with your party is essential for smooth play.
Talking like a baby when referring to classes and abilities sort of throws a wrench in the cogs.

As long as you understand what they are saying there shouldn't be a problem. Having said that, hearing the term "toon" to refer to a character makes me want to punch a baby.

I thought DD meand Damage Dealer, as in a class/job who's role is to... Deal damage hehe...

While DPS means Damage Per Second, which is basically means the amount of damage you deal over time.
The term DPS can be used on any job or class. Example: A WHM spamming stone is DPSing for X.

While DD can not. A WHM is not a DD(it's main role isn't dealing damage), but can DPS using damage dealing spells.

Damage Dealer is a more "casual" reference from DD, but the true roots of DD in RPG games has its definition as, "direct damage".

I don't like the term dps either but to be fair the Dev team described DD as dps and that is how DD jobs are referred to in the duty finder
Couldn't agree more. I don't think it has anything to do with WoW hate, but rather learning this game's terminology. We have tells (not whispers), tanks have been asked to use taunt (which I'm assuming is provoke), guilds instead of linkshells/free companies, calling archer "hunter," and I think you get the point. lmao I think people have used one set of terms for so long, they tend to think they're universal.

Seeing as it says DPS in the duty finder and Yoshi himself says DPS, I think it is the correct terminology for this game, stop pretending this is FFXI :P

Personally I perfer caster and melee.

In FFXI the term "DD" did indeed stand for "Damage Dealer". The term "DPS" was barely even used in FFXI. I'm not sure I even heard the term "DPS" used until I started playing WoW back in BC. There weren't any damage meters in FFXI that I know of, so the term really didn't have much of a place.

As for "DD" standing for "direct damage", I've never heard of that at all.

    Who's complaining? It's more a pet-peve than a complaint.

DPS doesn't really bother me. I use the term myself when shouting for people in RT. "Pally" instead of PLD is pretty pointless, though.

Maybe you haven't been on this planet long enough? Dungeons and Dragons uses it (the first mainstream RPG, and we did it all on paper), M:TG uses it, and yes, even FF. Of course, I'll just provide a fan link to FFXI since you think it never existed in FFXI as a fan or player term:

    http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/wiki/Direct_Damage

Here's another one, where Black Magic in Final Fantasy dating back to as early as FFIV, used the "Direct Damage" terminology.
