Terminology. Why does it bug me and others?

For some reason the use of terms like "DPS" instead of DD, and "Pally" instead of PLD, bug me and I can't really say why. It's not that I dislike WoW. I've played WoW for 5+ years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game until recently.

Is it because I expect only FFXI terminology to be used? I can't really say. I'm not really sure what it is or why it bugs me to see terminology from other games used in this one.

What? There is no renew spell...

I don't like the term dps either but to be fair the Dev team described DD as dps and that is how DD jobs are referred to in the duty finder

Couldn't agree more. I don't think it has anything to do with WoW hate, but rather learning this game's terminology. We have tells (not whispers), tanks have been asked to use taunt (which I'm assuming is provoke), guilds instead of linkshells/free companies, calling archer "hunter," and I think you get the point. lmao I think people have used one set of terms for so long, they tend to think they're universal.

Tanks get asked to use "taunt" because you have a few of them, in the case of GLD/PLD you have Shield Lob and Flash, both skills whose primary or only purpose is to generate enimity, these are collectively known as "Taunts" and the healer yelling that at the tank is leaving the choice of which one to use up to the Tank, just as long as them mob stops chewing on the healer.

and as to most people using Guild instead of Free Company/Linkshell... Guild is more ubiquitous as it has been used since the "Dawn of MMOs". A few games have sought to give them their own name (Free Company/Linkshell. Troop, League...etc) the catch all that most people understand is Guild.

It aggravates me, not when people use different terminology (for the most part) but when people attribute terminology (and other things) to WoW, since as we all know, there were no MMO's before WoW...

In fact, most of the terminology (and other things) predate even MMO's and originated in MUDs (and some even predate video games entirely...)

This thread has finally clarified to me what 'DD' stands for... I'd been trying to figure that one out - what special variation on the DPS role it was.

It took me a while too to figure out why everyone kept referring the plaid character class: PLD. Not to mention whatever SMN stands for, this game being rated for teens and all, I'm tossing out my first guess.

"You people" have some strange words around here, and yeah - the thing about an MMO that gets a wide audience is more mainstream terminology comes in.

I don't see the issue as long as you know what they are referring to. By now I think most of the terms have become fairly universal, at least in my opinion.

LOL, been using the term dps for over 10 years and it certainly didn't come from WoW
