That is because 1.0 trial codes ARE purchase codes. They were complimentary upgraded to full paid accounts due to poor sales. They basically gave all trial code users a free copy of the game. He's only entitled to the 30 days if he registers it on a NEW account. He can't register it on his current account because for some reason, Square is handling 1.0 trial codes as if they were purchased codes.
Technically, he didn't even need to purchase ARR. He could've payed $15 sub fee instead of $30 game fee and gotten 52 days of game time.
Buddy Pass codes were full versions of the game from the beginning. There is no 'trial' code. There are only game codes and you can subscribe or not subscribe.
Buddy Pass came with a 'trial' but it was always true that after the trial was completed you could opt to pay for a subscription without paying for the actual game. Mainly because Buddy Pass codes were full copies of the game to start with. (I have one and used it from the CE)
