See AF as an uniform for the job. You can also not dye twin adder uniform red or a maelstrom uniform yellow.
You know, there are tons of anime/VG protagonists who customize their organization's uniform, check Tvtropes : http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph.../CustomUniform. Definitely think any gear with a significant singular color texture should be dyeable, and material should be allowed with aggressive stat caps on non-crafted gear.

basically you're asking for better craftable armor. fair enough, try to sound less whiny next time.

True, though as also mentioned in that tvtrope page it is most often used to help audiences identify the main characters from the mooks and red shirts. As the person you quoted said, think about it like a uniform for the job.

Difference here is we don't have to make it super spiffy to stick out from all the generic characters on non-importance. But this really comes back more to the clown suit syndrome MMO's tend to suffer from, which is what dye and vanity systems are there to mitigate. I would rather they don't allow customization on the Artifact and Relic gear as it is meant to be iconic. The rest of the gear in the game, I could care less if it was dye able or not so long as the base look of it is good.

As something I learned while working on art and such is if the line art and composing is crap, no amount of polish will make it great. So if the base look of an armor does not appeal to you, there is no amount of dying that will change that. So are you looking to dye gear you dislike, or gear you like the base appearance of? Granted this is a little different when involve roleplaying reasons, but even then people tend to stick to gear that plays to an image they want/like.

Personally I hate the materia system, just the fact you need to level crafting to meld them in is a pain..

Also can't dye armor like darklight.. Sadness.

Yeah, it's so annoying that crafters are good for something right? I hate things that make stuff useful. Everything should be handed to me on a silver platter!

You realize you don't have to level a craft and you can just make someone else who likes crafting do it for you right?

I dyed a set of green metal armor into Gold armor because I liked the model but hate green. So many dungeon greens are a dull brown I'd be happy with any other color.

No, we just want to customize our characters' gear so that we can stick out from the crowd of everyone else who looks exactly the same.

Which is why I don't care if the non-iconic gear is customizable. As if wearing GC uniform peices, or artifact or relic, it is meant to look a very specific way to be easily identifiable, and some players use them for that very specific reason. Consider large scale events like certain boss fates, I'd be much more likely to protect a WHM in their Iconic White and Red artifact gear than the hypothetical special snowflake WHM in Rainbow colored gear just for the simple fact I can easily identify them as being a healer. Same goes for healing tanks.

That's a bit silly. You can tell by the spells their casting, or the weapon their using, easily enough. My desire for my character to look the way I want it trumps your desire for my character to look the way you want it.
