It is possible to get whites from NPC,
However it is sometimes cheaper to buy them from a crafter.
Also I believe (and don't quote me on this because this could be false information) You can get higher tier materia by converting high quality equipment created by crafters.

The base item converted heavily influences the type and quality of the resulting materia.

Well, for starters, try to spiritbond items with the stats for it, gear which has spellspeed on it has a bigger chance than gear that doesnt on it. Oh, and it MUST be caster gear, you wont get quicktongue from chainmail :P

HQ gear spiritbonds 50% faster. Vendors don't sell HQ.

Buying from vendors also sucks gil out of the economy faster than the markets ever could.

So, buying from vendors not only wastes your time, but also makes us all much more poor in the long run. GG.

No one cares about the economy if they can buy something for cheaper from a NPC than the AH. It forces crafters to sell for less than the NPC, which is completely retarded. High level gear in FFXI cost THOUSANDS of gil from the NPC and it was pretty much NEVER worth buying anything from NPC's past level 15.

No one is going to waste time HQing gear to spiritbind, takes far too much time. You'd be better off just NQing it and doing DD/castrum/dungeons in NQ stuff, actually ends up being less time spent than HQing and spirtbinding in that.

I make full HQ accessory sets in under 5 minutes as needed. It takes 2 CM runs to SB each set. I'm making a killing on materia. Check my lodestone profile if you must, my GSM is 50.

(Also worth noting that I do this with NQ mats. No, I'm serious. Stop looking at me like that.)
