Aion was fine at release, I played at beta and up to 2 years past release. Nice try. And, Vanilla wow was HOW long ago? Also, who gave a fuck about SWTOR. Cause that was horrible.
Actually I did. I played Aion (great release besides the gold spammers), SWTOR, PS2, etc.
I also played a butt load of FREE mmos at release and beta, and it went extremely smooth.
Here's a problem with the whole "Vanilla wow was just as bad!" How many years ago was that? MMOs have learned since then how to properly release an MMO. SE has already dropped the ball once, I would've hoped for a better release here. These server capacity issues should have been anticipated, network load should've been anticiapted, most of these bugs they're fixing should've been found in alpha or beta, and most importantly, they should not be having so many maintenance. If they're actually fixing stuff instead of restarting the servers and calling their ISP and learning how to reset switches, and buying new hampsters to run their building's power, we wouldn't have these issues.

and you've never played LOTRO, Rift, Age of Conan, Neverwinter, or Guild Wars 2
What's your point?
Here's the thing, contrary to popular belief mmo launches can, in fact 'not suck'. I hate this current mentality of expecting failure and excusing it. Consumers have every right to be angry when a product they pay good money for, does not FUNCTION. No matter how much it bruises your ego.
Square-Enix has no excuse. They knew their preorder numbers, bragged about them. And yet they were caught off guard, after experience with two other mmorpg launches? If these servers were Japanese, they'd be fixed by now. How are they able to keep Japan's servers up and running but now NA/EU? How hard can it possibly be?
Why do the Japanese have twice as many servers than parts of the world with over three times their total population? The USA alone, has three times as many people. Europe has over twice that. And yet the servers for both minimal, and seem to run on AA batteries.

Higher population means what here? You're looking at the wrong numbers. Online gamer population would be the correct statistic here, and I am more than sure Japan has a higher number than the U.S.and you've never played LOTRO, Rift, Age of Conan, Neverwinter, or Guild Wars 2

Higher population means higher chance of more gamers. If you didn't make assumptions and actually looked it up, you'd see that PapesseLudovique is correct.
US gamer population is over 170million people. How many people live in japan? That number is 127.6 million people.
There's more gamers in the US than there are people in Japan.
I'm not looking up anything, because I'm lazy. Just offered up some advice to him. Ignore total population, and focus on number of online gamers, and then focus on total subbed to FFXIV. If you want to research numbers for me, go ahead. But I award you no points, because you don't have what I like to call the social skills.Higher population means higher chance of more gamers.
