Level 50 GC Weapon Requires Amdapor?

So I just hit 50 the other day. While I was leveling and doing Fates, I was planning on buying the level 50 GC weapon as soon as I got to 50. However, I found out that to get the level 50 weapon I have to do Amdapor Keep. Don't you need to get some gear upgrades before doing Amdapor? It seems kind of out of order to do Amdapor Keep to get a green GC weapon when I can just go farm Ifrit for a better one?

    Not really.

Amdapor is doable in AF gear if you at least buy lvl 49-50 whites to fill in your gaps. Its harder, and easier if you have friends already geared to help you, but a well coordinated fresh group should have no problems.

Why would you want to do Ifrit and be the slave of RNG?

You can farm ifrit as a stunner to get the sword, but you never know if its going to drop. I would suggest doing Wanderer's Palace for green gear, especially the shield from the boss. Darklight Kite Shield is the best you can get until relic, and he also drops a green sword that you can use to farm AK. I wouldn't suggest tanking AK undergeared, because you will put a ton of stress on a healer between the colossus' and Hound Lights(they hit like trucks).

Yeah, I did two Ifrit PUG runs last night and tanked one and stunned on the other. Both went fine. I am wearing the blue Paladin gear and have a pink(?) aetherial sword (lvl 44). My accessories are mostly level 40s gear except for my earrings (lvl 32) and braclet (lvl 36) but both of those are GC gear and not crappy white gear or anything.

We went in there with me fresh 50 BLM (I had plenty of 40+ gear on... whatever could be gotten from quests and that was it), a pretty fresh healer SCH (in fairness he had the ifrit weapon he had JUST won prior to us going into AK, but everything else was still quest items), another DPS (Monk), not sure where his gear was, but nothing special, and a tank (WAR - Who said warriors were bad tanks :P) who has gotten a couple AK drops already but nothing else.

It can be done... easily in fact. DPS was very close on the wall, killed on the 2nd attempt no LB on the adds (since it got burned on the first) and was just barely pushed into the soft enrage. Last boss we got on our second attempt, because it being our first time (me and the healer) we had no clue what to fully expect on some of the mechanics. Seriously, none of our wipes were caused by a lack of gear. It was all because we had to learn the instance.

Best bet is to do some WP runs. There's a nice level 50 sword (and shield) at the end of the dungeon. You should be able to replace your accessories with high level 40 stuff off the AH relatively cheap.

You can also farm Ifrit pretty easily as a fresh 50 as well. I jumped in there after finishing the story and got lucky and got my BLM weapon the first time ever going in.

I think the GC Lv50 weapons are good for alternate classes as there's easier methods of getting a weapon upgrade on your first class.

This was my thought as well. I am leveling a monk next so I have a DPS option (my FC has a lot of people leveling gladiator) and I should have the GC rank unlocked by then and will be able to buy my monk GC weapon straight away.

you can do ifrit before AK its a very simple fight and get your weapon and then will be fine grinding out AK till you have the greens for garuda

I would say ifrit is actually harder, it is just easier to get carried in because you have more people (so you are more likely to get overgeared people to make up for you). But I do NOT recommend "farming" him, since it is a total waste of time. Waiting for 45 mins as a DPS, plus the chance that you will get bad players just makes this a horrible option. (my win to loss ratio here is not very great). Nevermind that AK farming is the best for tomestones (until weekly cap). As I said above, get some "ok" gear, and you can clear AK just fine. No "gear upgrades" required.
