I remember in 1.0 that the ferry was, indeed, a ride. I rode it a couple times just to watch the world go by. Pretty big boat on the inside, too. But clearly, some people didn't really care for it and now the ferry's a cutscene.

I miss the boat. From what i remember, you could fish on it, and get special fish you couldn't get everywhere, and if you got tired of it taking a while, you could basically just exit it and be there. So it didn't really take that long. It wasn't perfect, but i actually miss it.

Just curious, were airship and boat rides in FFXI instanced? Or did we really fly/sail across the world? Because while playing the game, I often saw airships fly in the distance. Wondering if there were actual players on board.

They really sailed across the sky, stuck to exact timetables and the like. If you missed it well, go make a snack because it's gonna be another 15min

They were instanced, but they also made an airship/ferry in the zones at the same time. So essentially, there weren't real people on them, but it was synchronised perfectly with the zones.

I miss them too, I'd like them to bring them back. I hope if we go to another continent with an expansion, we actually have to travel. That first boat ride from Mhaura to Whitegate made Whitegate feel really far away.

There's been talk of bringing back slow-travel, but only if the dev team can think of a good FATE to implement on it (to incentivize using slow travel). If they can't think of a FATE to implement there, they won't bring back slow-travel.

Looked much better, ran much worse.

We'll get a decent upgrade on graphics with the release of the DX11 client next year.
