I think it would work best if it gave you access to some fishing areas or some special merchants while on the ship, it'd give people a reason to get on and keep them from whining.

Honestly, riding the ferry and watching the sea was one of my favorite things in FFXI. I loved socializing with people there.

Make ferries take 10 minutes, free.

Charge for instant ones.

The 1.0 travel was interesting but it got old fast. You would have to talk to the ticketer, then wait for the airship or boat to arrive, wait for everyone to dock, then wait for the entire trip. Then get off, then talk to the ticketer yet again to give you permission to exit the boarding area(why?). If I remembered correctly I would take the ship to LL then go afk, and if I didn't come back in time to get off the ship it would head back to uldah WITH ME STILL ON IT. Would have been quicker to walk. Its redundant waiting time that serves no purpose.

Throwing a bonus for 1.0 ferry: Did you know that during summer event it was decorated? That was really pretty and fun to watch... Maybe someone can find a video of summer event ferry... (it also had the event music)
