Have MMO players lost their way?

Uhm, you don't need to sacrifice your social life. (otherwise I'd question your existence as a human being). 1-4 hours a day will get you where you want. Considering the instances are short enough and it's not exactly hard to get to level 50. Not everyone plays to be the best either.

I get your point; eventually people will all get to end-game if they play for while. The point I have the problem with is that people expect to get the same result as people playing 3-4 times more than them. If you want to be as geared as them, you will need to put more time daily. Otherwise, be patient my friend, all comes in good time!

Newsflash: If millions of people don't play Demon Souls/Dark Souls because they don't like how hard it is. It's not as great as you're making out. If millions of people enjoy FF 14 because it's to their taste, then it is an amazing game.

Bad example with the McDonalds... I go there for cheap, fast food. If the food wasn't at least tasty, then I wouldn't go there.

People complain about how hard it is to kill titan to get their relic. The best possible item in slot, and they complain that they don't have it within week 1. Imagine what a slap in the face that is to the people who spent 2 years (after they spent months getting to 75) to even consider trying to get their relic.

Things are just different now. The game sadly was either like it is now, or it was never going to happen. I wish a lot of things were different, but sadly I accept the fact that they are they way they are because SE had to make money off this game.

I want to have your babies. Seriously though you worded exactly the way i feel about ffxiv ARR atm. I cant motivate myself to log in after work because... it feels kind of empty, i'm missing depth. I'd love to see this game work though so i'm willing to give it a shot for a while but i'd like to see a different vibe (mainly that i feel like i'm playing an offline game instead of an MMO)

How am I limiting myself by not doing content that offers me no reward? If anything I would consider that not limiting myself by the completionist mentality in favor of progress.

But there is also, pvp (when available), exploring, crafting, helping others, and leveling. Its not about what YOU want to experience it is about what the game wants you to experience.

I have 2 level 50 crafts, 1 level 50 Gathering class, 4 Level 50 jobs run a LS that constantly helps it's members and I happen to be a huge fan of PvP. All of that because it is what I want to experience. But that doesn't mean I need to run Tam-Tara to help people out or collect all the gear or do all the little sidequests to gather little pieces of the story.

Games are what YOU make them not what they make you. For example, we often come up with mini games like scavenger hunts or do things backwards like fight Ifrit in our Bikinis just to add some entertainment value or challenge in. My point is, an MMO is about having a wide variety of things to do and not be pigeonholed into linearity like most RPGs. RPGs have limited content that never changes so you feel like you have to do everything to say you experienced the game, MMOs differ from this in that you can do the content you enjoy.

To do it with a friend, is even more enjoyable. It's a shame you probably already have a FC/LS, cause you sound like a great adventuring pal. Lol

No, that's silly. The game doesn't want anyone to experience anything. The game is for whatever purpose the purchaser/player wants it to be for, within the limits of what its design is capable of. Skipping content that's of little to no interest isn't limiting yourself, it's being discerning. I don't owe it to anyone to force my way through content just because it's there.
