Just because the spectre of 1017 is all but gone doesn't mean there aren't queues. Since the recent maintenance I've been placed in a queue on log in the majority of times I tried logging in. I dare not imagine how things are in other countries. Having the nouveau idle get kicked for being idle does wonders to keep these queues from hitting the triple digits (so far the longest queue I've seen was 32). I don't see the problem with it and I hope it stays.
As for my friends and I we are college students and it was nice to go into que and work on school work until the que popped. Now we can longer do this so my play time has been cut down. As far as saying that if I am in game and not doing anything and taking up server space. How is this an issue? Am I not paying for this space? Not everyone can log in and be at the computer the whole time. I often AFK to attend to other things while in que from school work or kids. The logging back in is not the issue its the not longer in dungeon que that is.
The problem with the 'I'm paying too' argument is 'so's everyone else'. You're no more nor less entitled to play time as the other thousands of players who are sitting in a queue waiting for a spot to open so they too can play. Learn to share. Or don't, Square already made the decision for you, you were too busy being AFK to reply.
So, to be clear, both you and your friends would log in, join the Duty Finder, and then go AFK? None of you found it inconsiderate to force other players- in fact all other players in your entire Duty group- to wait when the dungeon queue pops while you're engaging in your non-game activities for you to time out?

So even if the AFKers weren't the reason for the issues... what is so bad about the logout timer? Even if there were no server issues... (I ask again) whats the big deal about a logout timer? It isn't enough to even be considered an inconvenience

You are paying to play the game. Once you are done playing, and your character is just sitting there, you're not playing.
You do not enter a restaurant, eat your food, pay your bill, and continue to just sit there for hours. Especially if there is a line of people waiting to get in.
If you do, I have truly lost any hope that humanity will survive as a species ><
Oh, and the rest of us really don't want to stare at your character, bouncing around in active mode, in the middle of a main thoroughfare, wearing gear that everyone is able to get. Ugh, really people?
Everyone thought paid retainers and fantasia would be the end of it.
You were warned.
Cash shop in, TrystWildkey out.
You're not the only one. Agreed. I often web browse while I watch my duty finder in the background. I prefer to do other stuff while waiting but I've been caught so many time in the middle of some crafting session or fate and I can't end what I'm doing and switch fast enough to join. 30-40 seconds they give you is not enough. so I just let it sit and watch stuff or browse in the foreground. Only now I get logged out since freaking duty finder takes so long.I am not AFK, I am still here at my computer waiting for a dungeon party. So, no. Of course, because troll= someone who has a different opinion than you? lol. The issue of the "world being full" error has been corrected. You can even create a character on once populated servers! So therefor there is no reason for the logout timer. No reason at all. AFK people don't lag others, FATEs do. The only time it should be implemented is during dungeons to stop lechers.
Furthermore, if I pay for season tickets for some sports game and I don't go to a game, they don't sell my seat to someone else! I've paid for it! I feel like SE is kicking me out of my paid slot so they can sell more slots to other people. Its a smart business decision because the more actives they can fit on a server the less worlds they have to run - lower costs for them. But not fair to those that are paying! If AFKs are taking up space, then they should build more servers! Don't kick people just because you overloaded the servers to begin with - that's not my fault! SE probably wanted to do auto-logout to begin with but thought there would be a ton of backlash. Then the playerbase begged for it and now they are rubbing their hands together with glee XD
Nope, you are wrong.
If I go to a nice restaurant I don't get to do whatever I want because I paid for a service. If I become a nuisance to the other paying customers they would surely throw me out.
If you are afking in SE's "restaurant", you are being a nuisance to their other paying customers that would like to come in. So they will surely throw you out. (afk timer)
Luckily, unlike the restaurant, SE will gladly let you come right back in when you're ready to play.
Ew that's unacceptable you want to socialize in an MMO? What's wrong with you? Go back to FFXI pls the new generation of MMOs must kick you out after 30 minutes. Who cares about reading your LS/FC chat that's for nerds. Requesting a materia meld? That's dumb too. Stop socializing. You think you're entitled to stay online with your account just because of a monthly fee? Disgusting. For me it's a social thing. If I get AFK logged out then I don't know whats been going on in my linkshell when I was away, it's not a huge thing but something I liked about being able to idle for however long I wanted hell at times I would sit in the game for hours just to chat with people and often dissapear for a while and come back and pick up the conversation from there.
This community sucks.
