FFXI didn't feel much like a Final Fantasy game either.

The battle music in 14 is weak. Everything else is superb in my opinion.

It's been a staple in FF history, the battle music follows a certain formula and every single one has in some level pumped up the player. In 14 it's a background track of electric guitar and underwhelming tunes as you grind away.
I mean no disrespect as overall it's very impressive, it's just simply not fitting.
You must not have been to mor-dhona or coerthas. Battle music there is pretty awesome. The battle music in 14 is weak. Everything else is superb in my opinion.

but yea, not all the music is awesome.
no i do agree with you. some soundtracks are awesome, actually all of them are awesome and nobuo is a great music artist but i feel like in most of the songs, hes missing the feel, mostly with alot of the battle music. and city music. environment music seems fine.
i just noticed it kuz i was listening to some FFXI tracks yesterday and as i listened to more and more, it brings back memories of parties, NM hunts and crafting for days in windurst, and im not really getting that with this game. i know it hasnt been out long, but i dont feel the same listening to XIV's soundtrack
Me and ivera have been to Mor Dhona and Coerthas..the music in those places are really cool, it's just...everywhere else is a bit lacking. Some of the 14 tracks we've found on youtube are pretty nice, but *most* are not..
And the gameplay I've seen of XI looks a hell of a lot more like FF than XIV, including music.. And I've never played 12 or 13 so I wouldn't know how those *feel* as FF games.
the music in mor dhona is definatly good, nice feel. it matches the game and area great. i dont know about the battle music there. i dont know anyone who has tried to fight anything there, i definatly didnt.
but the good tracks are not heard nearly as often as they should. the ones we hear all the time like the cities and battle music outside, the leve quests songs. things like that, they just dont feel right
i do love the mor dhona music, but the rest to me is trash. it's to the point i have in game music turned off at all times unless out camping dodore.

I think it's....
...the setting. The world setting feels a lot more Western and a little bit more techy than the Final Fantasies I'm used to. The addition of Chocobos, Airships, and hopefully some more familiar monsters from the series will go a long way. The story is also a little different as most of the time it's Band of Heroes vs. Overlords, but right now it's more like "Everyone vs. Garleans, but doom is going to come from somewhere else this time." There isn't much conflict between you and the Garleans right now (SPOILER) Until later on in the storyline.
The music is fine I think; besides the idle music, most of it is pretty much remixes of several musical scores from past Final Fantasies. People hate Gridania because the outside is a latticework of trees and paths and the inside is completely spread out so that it's a total pain to walk anywhere worth going.
Peach Parfait/Khulan Angura on Gilgamesh
That's a good point, the game's atmosphere and environments plays a huge part in whether it feels like an FF game or not. The addition of Chocobos and airships will help a lot, but we all know that. I'm not a fan of Gridanias/black shrouds layout either, it's such a confusing maze >.<I think it's....

But IMO the music still plays a big part in the feel of the game as well..cuz if you're subconsciously listening to the Irish-feeling music of la noscea, then you'll feel like you're in the Shire rather than in an FF world XD
