n other words if they have 7 people i will join last minute to give 8 people full party bonus and not join in the actual fighting and sit by the node. it helps the behest party twice by giving them full party buffs and additional mobs, but by sitting at the node i am not affecting the rest of the behest sp wise.

Actually, you are. As long as you're in the party, you're affecting SP. What you're supposed to do is join the behest and then leave the party.
