The E8500 is a dual core? If it is, it's an old model. Also what type of mother board? Not sure if your laptop is a gaming laptop, or just a laptop you decided to slap some parts into and expect the best. Also, is your ram Dual Channel or Single Channel? x2 4 GB Dual channel is better than a single 8GB stick. So if you're running 2 single channel 4 GB sticks, that can be an issue as well, just as well as your MB. I'd upgrade from that dual core. Some games are just more demanding. I had to drop my resolution to 1600x1400?, somewhere around there, just to be able to play Witcher 2.

Anyways, most of the graphics are medium to high, with a few tweaks here and there such as shadows. Solid 30-50 frames. Custom fan profile and adequate cooling makes a huge difference.

If you can't run it on low, your rig is essentially obsolete, tbh.

No offense, but the fact that you think im using a laptop when mentioning E8500 and 295GTX goes to show how little you know about it... And since when have you been able to "slap parts" into a laptop? Never.

Then again, things also make more sense now. Having to lower your resolution as opposed to your monitors native (like you did), and run at a 30-50fps mark is certainly not "absolutely fine" as you stated earlier. You may be able to deal with it, were all different like that - but even so, the stability of the game is nowhere near acceptable, and it has to do with the lack of graphical settings. You should know the least acceptable fps in a game in theory is 60.

There's a reason games have minimum recommended specs to play, if your computer doesn't meet them then I don't know what to say. That's one of the things you should read before buying the product, if your PC can't meet even the minimum (in all areas) might be time to upgrade.

    Minimum recommended specs for FFXIV:

    Windows® Vista 32/64bit, Windows® 7 32/64 bit, Windows® 8 32/64 bit
    Intel® Core™2 Duo
    2GB (4GB recommended for 64bit OS)
Available space on hard disk/SSD 20GB
    NVIDIA® Geforce® 8800 or higher, ATI Radeon™ HD 4770 or higher
    1280x720 Screen Resolution
    Persistent broadband internet connection required
DirectSound® compatible sound card (DirectX® 9.0c or higher)
    DirectX® 9.0c or higher

And that's because I read your post wrong. And since when you cannot slap parts into a laptop such as a processor or RAM hmmm? Hell, I can slap my GTS 450 into a laptop via a quick USB mod. And it looks like you misread my post as well. You can drop the attitude. I said I dropped the resolution for Witcher 2. I run FF at 1920 by 1080 bud, and it runs absolutely fine. And the least acceptable FPS for any game is 30 - 40, which is entirely playable. Everyone shoots for 60, but it's not needed at all.

Anyways, have fun being a pompous dick and not playing your "unacceptable" frame rate. I'll enjoy mine.

Also, you have an Nvidia graphics card, if you want the game to run at lower graphics settings just tweak the settings of your graphics through the nvidia control panel, instead of having the game run on "Application controlled" settings you can go in and specify your own settings for the game itself without effecting everything else on your computer.

That's why they put a minimum requirements to run the game.. If the game runs in your pc/laptop and you have lower than the minimum is not SE problem.

You can 'slap parts' into a laptop. It depends on your skill level and your wallet. It's not exactly cost effective for some and depending on where you get the parts, bank breaking, but it is in fact possible. If I felt like it, I could toss in a pair of new gfx cards into my MX-17 or something alienware laptop and off I go. If you are running off a cookie cutter laptop, then not as likely.

In regards to fps, between 30-60 is acceptable. If it wasn't, 85%(not a true percentage, but it is very high) would not be able to play Metro and have an amazing visual quality. Some people do not mind 30 fps. Is it the best? No. But is 60 fps the minimum acceptable? No, it is not.

Nothing wrong with having an off option for shadows, they are pretty ugly anyway.

The game it self looks so/so it doesn't have great dynamic lights , the textures look washed and aren't crisp.
Shadows aren't something to brag about either, usually they are cast wrong.

Here is the catch Texture quality/proper Anti aliasing/ Lighting effects are much more important than shadows and grass.
That's what you keep on, when you run in a town/raid or fate you will probably put the shadows low first.

The ARR grass looks like what MMO's used pre WOW, with out proper AA it shakes as well.
This you can put on low or off (it's also a massive FPS hit)

Adding grass/shadows like ARR does is basically just adding fluff for high end rigs with out making the game look actually better.
I think the game would look a lot better with a bit less shadows and higher texture quality.
