What I don't like is the following:

I have a i7 960 processor, a GTX 480 card, and good cooling. Yet, where other modern games don't shove me to 100% GPU usage and 80 degrees when I max settings, FFXIV does. If I go 1080p, max settings (with ambient occlusion and AA lowered), my % usage stays high (85-100%) and my temps soar to 75-85 and I start getting some chug here and there. This makes no sense. The 480 was the best card available when FFXIV came out and my processor is above average. So now I play at 720 resolution and with my fan set to 70%, I can stay in the 55-65 range in temps with about 30-40% gpu usage.

So basically, why can't my top-of-the-line card max this game when it can max other games no problem -_-

First your card is probably an EVGA card and needs an aftermarket cooler, the EVGA reference fan setup is HORRID, Secondly the other issues you are experiencing is the entire point of this post. This game was optimized by a 2 year old with a programming book made in 1970. I seriously believe for the last 5 years SE relied on interns to do most of the programming for XIV, and until they properly optimize the game client things will continue to work as is.

Well... Resident evil 5 was on PS3 and it have DX10, Mass effect was on PS3 and it have DX10... I don't see any problem with PS3 architecture.

No, no it didn't, the RSX is only a dx9 card, and most of the ps3 games use OpenGL, those games were either dx9 with some clever coding to make it look almost dx10, but this taxes the cpu, or it was a clever coded OpenGL effect.

atleast you're not going without ac been there done that and my house was constantly 94 for a floridian summer time bleh... but anyway... I know I have issues with heating on my laptop after playing the game for an hour but my card is below specs as well as the processor >.< you're all lucky you can play the game for as long as you do some of us have to wait for ps3 or for enough money to buy a decent enough desktop to play

Sad part is, say my framerate goes from 60 to 40 with 6 PCs on screen. It doesn't matter if they are right in front of me or very far away, right before they disappear, it still consumes the same resources.

This kind of HUGE lack of optimization is what really brings the game down, they should at least replace models for simplified ones at some point, it would look ugly and jumpy but that's better than wasting resources like it is now.

Now with tessellation the GPU would do all that in hardware, they wouldn't need to create different models, geometry changes would be seamless and could adjust parameters dynamically if needed to prioritize a level of framerate over visual quality. But........................................

Actually I think since the PS3 has a lot of bandwidth and CPU power they could create a highly optimized software based tessellation engine. Since PCs are not all the same I doubt they could get away with the same grade of optimization so they might have to do a much lower quality and less optimized version for it.

Some posts here give me headache.
It doesn't make sense that FFXIV is not optimized because of PS3 limitations, guys.

PS3 is SLOWER than PCs nowadays, which would mean that if it runs bad on PC, it will run even worse on the PS3. That was the first reason why they pushed the PS3 release back, they failed to make it run on a PS3 even with extremely reduced textures (yay PS3 limitations). This doesn't mean the PC version has to lose graphics options. That's why they're called "options" - they're optional. They can include advanced optimization features not possible on a PS3 and make them PC-only.

That doesn't work any different from multiplatform C code - you just set ifdefs so that certain code only gets included for the windows version, for example. They already did it when they built the PC version and a PS3 version which had limited texture resolution compared to the PC version, so they can do it with other things too. They really should.
