I find it much more effectively to run through them when it comes to overpower and most other conal aoes.Been having the same issue, the Puk Hatchlings "Fireball" attack is just a circle on the ground, but if you don't leave it immediately you take damage even if you're outside of the circle when it hits. It's been the same with most weaponskills done by human enemies, especially the Marauder types. "Overpower" really hurts on a mage character and you can't escape unless you move backwards as soon as the skill comes up.
Some attacks I just can't avoid, but those ones usually aren't the most devastating.
