Unable to update the group NA/EU Character List but no maintenance is on

I've been getting either 1017 or unable to update NA/EU lists errors since 11am EST today. PS3 user. Numerous attempts at getting on in hour intervals throughout the day. Not even lucky enough to get the occasional cocktease of progressing past the character select screen.

That might count for some, but I have a friend who was unable to queue for Duty Finder ("You cannot queue at this time, try again later" type error). He then went to relog to solve the issue and that was about 2 1/2 hours ago. He was able to num0 spam for about 5 minutes and has not been able to see the server list since. Yet I'm happily grinding away at my gatherings

Sounds like your friend caught the super AIDS. A buddy of mine had the same sort of issue back in beta and head-start. Wouldn't let him enter any sort of instance, even story quest-related instances, so we fondly refer to it as "The Super AIDS". Issue didn't get resolved until the head-start was already over, but it looks like it's still cropping up.

Took 2 hours to log on. It was fine this morning. Eastern standard 5:30am

Same with me I was just randomly walking and got 9000. S/E said there will be a server expansion soon. Cross are fingers it all works out.

Aye, kick AFK players and everything should be solved in the short term. And let's be reasonable about it, stepping away to eat or taking a short break for an hour is totally reasonable imo. 3 hours eh that's kind of pushing it... 3+ though KICK!!!

Even an hour is ridiculous. Players that do this are taking up space for someone who is spending exactly an hour to get into the game. It needs to be 15-30 minuet afk timer that kicks players. If you need to leave for an hour, be nice and leave the game. Do not take up space for people who are trying to get into the game.

Let's all keep our fingers cross that the technical fixes they are applying to server capacity will alleviate this business. I certainly don't appreciate being forced to "Try again later." in regards to a game I spent my money on. Playing shouldn't be up to a company, the time of day, or any other aspects of life other than my own choice.

But! I love Final Fantasy and despite my complaining I'll probably never force myself to quit despite all this fuel to do so -__-;

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties wherein players are being disconnected from instances on the North American and European data center Worlds. As a result, customers who were disconnected from said content are unable to log in.

Unless the person who wrote that maintenance message doesn't know the difference between AM and PM, that message was posted at 4:53 in the morning EDT, which was 14 hours ago. Some people have said they are getting a server list now, but I still get that the server list can't be updated.

Underestimating sales is one thing, but refusing to implement a real queue and refusing to kick players who are AFK for hours at a time is another. The only reason not to implement such widely used practices is because they don't know how to do it. They made some money on this game, apparently, through initial sales, but it's looking more and more like FFXIV is going down in flames for a second time. They keep boasting that a second launch has never been done, will they brag so much when they crash and burn a second time?

You're still getting the server list can't be updated garbage? Oddly enough, I stopped getting the US/EU servers cannot be updated error and now receive a JP servers cannot be updated error. Though, of course, that's not to say I can actually LOG IN, so I can't say as though I feel like progress has been made.
