Just quickly looked around and aside the very dirt cheapest (And likely a crap one) the cheapest BD drive is looking at £45. With £37 for 50 discs. Great. The DVD is about to lose out thing doesn't fly, I bought my decent DVD-RW for £12 and 50 blank DVDs for about £15.

Guess I'll wait till its uploaded to the net by someone else. I haven't turned on the TV for 2 years, let alone considered buying a blu ray player for it.

Oh and before someone else tells me to get with the times, I will buy one when it's needed by more than a single product I own.

Thank you Thalamant for a civil reply.

The main issue here is you think your PC needs to be the global standard for video consumption. I'm sorry for being sarcastic, but you're being unreasonable about a video that isn't necessarily intended to be watched solely on PC when it was more than likely designed to be viewed from the living room on an HD television with a blu ray player or PS3.

I watch movies on my PC all the time, so I can see why this might be frustrating for you. But you can't say that blu ray isn't a modern format when it is the newest thing available and old enough now that we may hear about its replacement soon enough. The reason blu ray is more expensive is because it is newer technology and in higher demand today than DVD players. DVD drives and disks are cheap because they are old tech now that is on its way out. That doesn't mean DVD will be gone completely any time soon, but you're going to start seeing less movies (because that's what this is) available on DVD and more on Blu ray.

Anymore movies are only sold on DVD when you don't want to pay the higher price point for a blu ray disc, or you don't have a player or HD TV to take advantage of it.

When I made my pc I used a toshiba ihos 4, it was about £20.... Blurays have been out since 2006. DVDs look so block on anything except old TVs. Don't be cheap you can't live on DVDs forever.

Why are you pricing blank discs? You don't need them. You don't need a RW drive altogether, actually.

    £27, you're welcome.

Edit: TonyUK beat me to it.

    £27? You're getting ripped off....

    http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=56827

    £20.99 (plus postage).

DVD can't really contain HD movies, a DL DVD runs at 8Gb (Xbox 360 uses DL) and a DL Blu-Ray can take 50Gb, see the difference? A DVD (Dual Layer) can't even play back 1 hours worth of HD video, the medium is too small, games however can easily fit on a DVD and if they can't it's no issue to use multiple DVD's to install the stuff to your hard drive. Back in the day you'd have multiple CD-Rom's (FFXI is on 4) as DVD's were expensive and not everyone had one, most people skipped Blu-Ray on PC's as there really isn't the need for that much of a storage medium so games stick to DVD's as there isn't the market for games on BR.

You're wrong about it not being the new modern medium. Blu-ray's are 100x's more scratch resistant than DVD's due to the hard coating tech they were designed with. All blu-ray's are this way! It was apart of the RFC/standard. They also hold way more data than a DVD. For these two reasons DVD's will go the way of cassette tapes soon.

Blu-ray and DVD were locked in a battle years ago. The industry is accepting blu-ray's to be superior and there's honestly no reason not to accept this. Almost everyone I know has a blu-ray player of some kind, even if it's a PS3.

My two gaming laptops came with blu-ray players built in....

Honestly, Blu-Ray will probably be outdated in a couple years too. This is the era of high speed internet, streaming, and non-physical media. And the prices of blu-ray players nowadays only exemplifies that sentiment.

Face reality, BLU ray players are not as common as you are claiming. I only have one because of my PS3, if I didn't have a PS3 I would not have one because DVDs are still widely abundant and used almost everywhere, and do a perfectly good job of what they do.
To be fair: The OP wasn't asking for advice. She asked "why on earth is this on blu-ray?" So I will try to answer that question. This content is on blu-ray because it was intended to be viewed in high definition. Standard DVDs are only capable of video output that maxes out at 480p, or standard definition. Past that, you have HD-DVDs (a discontinued format), Blu-Ray, or streaming/digital. Any content that is HD (720p or higher) has to be in one of these formats.
