This is Final Fantasy. Monster types have always been mixed, except for FFXI. But then, FFXI was also the only one to have an entire party stand in one place and fight monsters one at a time.

Also, you seem to be suggesting that having the higher level treants NOT link would be more challenging. I think you have that backwards.

It would not, that would only make sense and avoid a potentially fatal, non the less hillarious death if they ever put a high level monster near a low level monster where there is no chance that a player could attack the lesser without invoking the wrath of the latter.

What I mean is that if you punch a boar in the face wouldn't it make sense for the rest of the boar who seen or heard you do said action and also be agressive? As it stands it's a flat out numbers thing it has nothing to do with what type of monster or where you are. FFXI isn't the only game to have herd AI but let's use that as the most familliar example.

In XI you could attack any monster or pull it if you were carefull watching line of sight, knowing what kind of monster and if they linked or not was a crucial part of gameplay. Now it's just roll of the dice and lines showing when the inevitable beatdown could occur.
