While it sucks, you would probably do the same thing if it took you an entire day to login.

Sitting there AFK all day is completely selfish.
I hope you get booted by the server, all of you.
You my friend are going to the Special hell...Until they fix the servers people like me will continue to eat up a spot on the server, sorry but that is the luck of the draw. Yes I have been AFK for 6.5 hours and will be for 4 more until I am home from work. Sorry but that is the luck of the draw. Call me a dick call me a jerk I dont care, until SE fixes these issues I will continue to do so. I logged out vehemently until yesterday when I spent 6 hours getting 1017 due to this. So since others decide that its ok to do this I have as well.

Two pages of replies and not one mention of the obvious solution: Make the servers able to handle everyone that wants to log on. Saying "build a mechanism that kicks people off from AFK" is both 1) irrelevant when the servers are able to handle everyone, and 2) takes actual work to design, code, test, and deploy -- possibly more work than just upping server capacity and/or finding the bottlenecks.
FFXIs timer didn't stop people from afking in the game. You could just go into the menu and turn it off at any time. I've had my character logged in for weeks on end in that game, along with most of the people who played it.

I certainly hope they add an AFK-kick timer.
The problem isn't a 30min idle or a quick afk. The problem is when people leave it on for hours and hours- some people have admitted to being afk 8hrs+! That's just unreasonable!
We're all in the same boat here. We all want to play the game.
Being selfish and not leaving when you're done just makes this problem worse.
If you're not actively playing the game then you have no business being logged in.

AFK-er for life.
Thinking of subbing just so I can AFK in Ul'dah indefinitely.
In all seriousness, my PC has been on all day while I'm at work, and I don't intend on ever logging out, either. SE needs to do something about their hardware, or else everyone is going to be doing like us. That won't really make for a nice launch, but them's the breaks.
The point is I want to play when I get home.
Then log in, when you get home.

This, im sorry but it does make you a dick. When your not going to be playing for hours on end it is just common courtesy to log out and let someone who currently has the time to play enjoy themselves. But alas, you may not be able to play when you get back due to the server being at capacity so you will waste a spot for hours on end because baby gets what baby wants *rolls eyes*
Addendum: Before anyone says i'm only mad because i cant log in i assure you i'm not. i played for two hours today and logged out willingly when i had to run errands, imagine that. I simply feel bad for the people who haven't gotten a chance to play due to the selfish ones :-/

These AFKers are more of a problem and are not helping even themselves by staying on, SE needs to do something about them, maybe even going so far to actually ban some of them.
