That's a good attitude to have, very commendable but people are gonna flip lol. On Balmung there was a Japanese Roegadyn who had Quad-melds in all slots for Black Mage, Monk, and Dragoon...I really feel sorry for him. He doesn't exactly need any more Darklight lol.

Why would you feel sorry for him? He is still going to have quads in every slot in ARR. I feel like people aren't reading carefully.
ALL Materia is now Cracked Materia. Look at the picture, if you had a Penta-Meld Cobalt Cuirass with 5 STR Materia, you now have a 5x Meld Cracker Materia Cobalt Cuirass. Which you have the option to exchange for Materia of your choosing or the "currency" for Raid/Darklight gear.

* Materia that has already been affixed to gear can be converted as is.ALL Materia is now Cracked Materia. Even after converting cracked materia, there is the possibility certain gear will see a decrease in effectiveness when compared to Version 1.0.

Ah, so it's saying those melds will retain the stat values of the quad-meld? That's odd if all Materia is becoming obsolete cracked Materia, with some Materia downright no longer existing like +enmity.

Sort of. Unless I'm wildly wrong about this (and that is possible), the implication is that when you convert a piece of gear with, say, four pieces of grade IV cracked materia- you get back gear with four pieces of grade IV ARR materia of your choice. I believe the main reason they throw up the disclaimer about the reduced potency is in the event of ARR grade IV materia, which all have the same stat value, having a lower value than your old grade IV from 1.0 (IE: your old grade IVs had 20 STR each, the highest 1.0 value, but the new ARR grade IVs are a standard 18 each). Plus, grade V is the new highest tier, so if you want a quad meld with all grade V's you'll have to start over on a new piece.
Still get to keep your old quads, but with new materia types/values they just may not be as strong as they were before (or as strong as a quad V in ARR).

I just want to say... Thank you.
It never made sense to me that you would lose your gear after a failed meld.
As of ARR:
Enhancement Cap - Maximum enhancement values will be imposed upon each gear slot.
So that quad meld of +20 (80) - will now be capped. Noone can say what yet as the cap could be set anywhere from 20-80.
But hey, lets have some speculation! Would it be a fair assumption that SE stick it right in the middle around 40-50 ish?
Common Sense is a language most misunderstood on the continent of the MMOForum
If 5x melds are still possible, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to hit the max value of the materia and gear allowed, but I guess they want some limit in place. As of ARR:
