I don't understand why we'll be able to buy/sell plots of land. Is there a limited quantity of each? Are there ways other than purchasing from an NPC to obtain? Assurance of a return to your initial investment if you find yourself low on gil?

Maybe you want to be in a neighborhood with a friend and the instance is full? Buy it off someone looking to buy a new house in another plot.
Buy your friends houses,
Buy out an entire instance if your friends and you are rich.
I guess what I'm really asking is how housing works. I know it's instanced, but I don't know how many instances can be created. I really want to know if the better plots of land are going to be in a limited quantity and those who join a server where legacy members are concentrated are going to get leftovers.
From what I gathered from all the info they've said (i'm working off of memory I could be wrong and cannot proper quote the sources, but mostly live letters)...I guess what I'm really asking is how housing works. I know it's instanced, but I don't know how many instances can be created. I really want to know if the better plots of land are going to be in a limited quantity and those who join a server where legacy members are concentrated are going to get leftovers.
It will be a variety of instances, however, each instance is a 'neighborhood' having various plots of land of different sizes. Only a small handful of large plots and various smaller ones. Once a neighborhood, an instance, is heavily populated (but not nescessarily full) a new instance, empty, will be generated. So in this case, only a few will be able to acquire larger plots in each instance, whereas most will get smaller plots.
So buying and selling plot is a thing, you might want to be in the same instance as a friend, you might want a large plot of land but the last instance isn't filling up fast enough and it might be safer to buy from another player than wait for a new instance to spawn and hope you can get the land first... And other such things.
Completely disagree with OP. ANYONE should be able to buy any kind of house regardless if they are into crafting/gathering or hardcore endgame. The easiest way to give everyone the same chance is to use gil.
god I had 88 mil in 1.0 and I worked really hard for that, how da fudge did people get 1 bil
I have only 2 million in 1.0, meaning i'll have 200k in 2.0. Can't care the less. I'll work for what I want even if it costs much more than that. I sure won't ask SE to waive the fee because I'm lazy.
'cause we all know the "omg gilsellers!" talk is just an excuse.

I agree there really noting to waste your money on. But the demand would go down less then 1month even tho yoshi-p said it would take a while for people to get access to get homes. I don't see it being as hard as he said it going to be. You could always buy a small house and upgrade it later once the cost is down. But even if there noting to waste your money on. One day they going to be something you need to buy with gil and you be like fucked wish i save my money and by that time gil may be hard to come by.Sure you could skip buying a house for many months, but then you risk losing any bonuses housing will provide like XP/gil bonus (from furniture) Storage space and anything else they provide.
Sure, it's a tossup, do I buy a house? Or do I save my money.
But then you ask yourself, what else would I spend my money on?
You can have more then 1 house per city so i think people can buy 5+homes in eachother make them look awesome. Then sell them for for loads of money and make profit. Also they never going to run out of spots the more demand there is for the homes the more slots open up by the npcs. The less the demand is the less the lot would cost to buy and less it would make slots to the demand goes up again,.
at least that what i understood when yoshi-p talk about homes few months back.

Many who have max players been playing sense day 1
At the start of the game leves made easy 1-2+mil per day. You link your leves to the point you could get 60k-180k or even 200k per leves. You did this with a party of 15 people played for 8+hours making 1-3+mil per day some made even more.
When they release the company asking for items fishing became big. Once you learn how to fish without issue you could easy watch tv and look at the screen every so often to clock on the right spot. So i did that for 5+hours then sold the fish on the right day the company are asking for. Made easy 1-8+mil eachtime then went back to fishing.
Also when they release melds some materia went for 5mil-20mil the day of release. People sold them and people did buy them. So people made some easy cash doing this everyday just make lot's of item then make them into materia.
When relic came out if you lucky and was rich you could turn a profit making the class weps. Making loads of money you could easy get max money doing this if you farm everything. I myself just farm the items like darksteel ore then turn them into nuggets. I made over 500mil with that but waste a lot of money buying melds and 55mil went to buying the relic weps ;(.
Also remember atomos? oh ya people made over 30+mil with that issue to they fix it. I bet people made over 300mil with that because they did it early on.

Well.... I played from the beginning and the most Gil I ever made was 6 Million. SO I will start with 600k into ARR.
I really hope Houses are not to expensive and I really wish I could get an another Server without broken Economy.... since I will have a hard time on old Servers with so many people having tons of Gil
