Power supply for 25.00. Sketchy, much?

I know when i clean the heatsink for the cpu it lower my temp by 10-15C due to how much stuff it on on it. That why now i clean my computer every few months to make sure it stay cool maybe that your issue also.

Riv, I should do that ... can you link me to the cleaner to buy? I know I have some arctic silver, unless it expires, lol. Beats taking out the motherboard and all that, might lower the temps. Worth a try! Shura, I'm pretty sure the motherboard will come out and I could install an aftermarket cooler, not 100% sure, but I'd definitely make sure before ordering (as well as the size).

EDIT: Oh, the PC is 3.5 yrs old. It played XI for a year and 1.0 and XIV (Beta) probably... 6-9 months total. No other games. Other use just ordinary computer use.

Also EDIT: Amazing how much room temp has to do with it. House thermostat got to 78, I noticed it was warm in the house (I'm in Fla lol), and the max temp on the CPU had gotten up to 73 and it was working at a little warmer like 62-65 so I turned the AC on and got the house temp down and reset the application and now the max temp is back to 70 again with running high 50s low 60s again.

Or you could just use like 90%+ isopropyl alcohol with a coffee filter.

Heh, I don't turn the heat on in my house for the winter and in the summer I try to keep it around 72 to help my temps.

There are several issues here.

1. If the Video card calls for 500W minimum, a 550W might not be enough. (You really need to consider you HD(s), USB devices etc. You would be borderline on maxing or going over. Plug in a power drawing device and your whole computer can go wonky.

2. I would highly recommend you avoid that guy, While he does not have a lot of bad feedback, ebay has things setup to prevent a lot of really bad feedback. However over the last month he has already had a neutral and a complaint about issues, lack of communication and quality, and is averaging several complaints a month a couple of which are power supply related. That is a sign to stay away.

4. A cheap powersupply can damage your hardware costing much more than your savings. It can also cause inconsistent perf if there are fluxuations.

I would personally recommend (if you can) buying a cheaper video card and getting a good power supply.

JillyBean you should check out Corsair's hydro series CPU coolers. The H80 is an awesome little cooler that it really simple to install. It's a completely maintenance free water cooling system that I've never seen anything but awesome performance from. I have an H100 and under prime95 I never go above 38c with an i7-3820. I've been running mine for a little over a year now. Makes the inside of your case look much cleaner as well.

i never waste my time buying that i always clean it good then put new thermal compound. But i guess if you really want too they can go and buy it but seem like a waste of money imo.

Never ever cheap out on a power supply. ALWAYS get a modular power supply. You are also likely going to want at least a 700W if not 800 in most cases once you factor in CPU, multiple hard drives, dvd or bluray and case fans.

There's nothing wrong with a non-modular psu, modular is just a convenience and there's no reason for this person on a budget to get more than 650w who is obviously not going to overclock the cpu or gpu.


Hell a 3770k/680 system doesn't use more than 500w at typical load on stock settings, adding in capacitor aging, 600~650w will be enough for the average person/system that's not dealing with overclocking.

I have a brand new Intel stock cooler sitting around (from my son's build, he didn't use it). Are these standardly sized? Can I just replace my 3.5 yr old fan with this one? If so, would that be an improvement at all, just by virtue of being brand new? As a reminder, my CPU is i7 860 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz , and this new fan I have sitting around came with this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501

If it is interchangeable, would this perhaps help my temps even more than just cleaning up the old one?

1156/1155 use the same heatsink I believe, had to varify by checking myself in the boxes, yes they are the exact same heatsink besides the sticker.


Just remember with the push pin ones to go in a X pattern and make sure the pins are fully seated down.

Honestly its hard to say, The 3770k on stock cooler runs at high 30s and low 40s which is what your getting now on your cooler. What you have to keep in mind is that the 3770k naturally runs cooler and uses less power then the 860 so there is a chance that the 3770k cooler might be worse then what you have now. BUT numbers change depending on setup so you'll have to try it out to know for sure.
