I have also seen people posted they ran their benchmark with a resolution of 2560x1600, which is what my Dell U3011 uses, but I cannot find it in the settings on the benchmark

And does Internet speed play a part in this benchmark also?
Other people could be overclocking which isn't shown in the specs the benchmark displays.

Internet connection has no effect on this benchmark.

Looking at other players with comparable systems, this seems just a bit low. Is it perhaps because I have an 8 core and Square doesn't get along with AMD graphics cards quite as well? Perhaps someone more computer-savvy could give me some advice? I haven't tried OCing yet as everything looks good "on paper" at least.

For the record, the graphics card is a 7950.

The lower performance is probably related to your CPU not the GPU. When I monitored the CPU usage most of the load is against two to three cores, there's activity on other cores, however it's very little. So this benchmark will favor Intel CPUs because they have a much higher IPC(Instructions Per Cycle) than AMD CPUs which have more cores.

Most people with AMD video cards are using AMD CPUs, which is giving the wrong impression about the performance of AMD video cards. I seen scores of AMD video cards with Intel CPUs and they are just as high as the equivalent Nvidia card.

I see someone get 7100 with an Intel CPU with same card at stock:

    on a Nvidia 580, Intel i7 950 @ 3ghz, 12gb DDR3 RAM i get 5596 at maximum.

Thing is i actually underclock my graphics card (slightly), i reduce the "graphics clock" from 787 to 700. It doesnt effect my score much.

Reason? if i let the fans do what they like they spin up to 90% as soon as i start a game up and i cant hear myself think even with a headset. With the underclock i can cap the fan speed at 60% (inaudible with headset on) and the GPU just about gets upto 80c.

I thought this might be interesting for people who hate noise as much as i do.

Sound like you may have a defective GTX 580 or a case cooling problem. That's really high fan speed.

I probably hate PC noise more than you. I have my PC set up that it's almost silent idle and still very quiet when playing a game. Using H80i CPU cooler set on low fan profile and a giant intake fan on my case set on low as well. I can only hear the H80i pump on idle.

Below is my videocard's cooler. Even though I have it overclocked a lot it doesn't make much noise. Max temperature during benchmark was 67 C and max fan speed hit 36%.

My slim PS3 sounds about twice as loud as my PC.

Its not defective and its not an airflow problem, its just they provide the bare minimum for reference coolers. even though the cards are easily £300+.

On top of that i think the software spins the fans up faster than they need to be at a given time

The card was running rock solid albeit loudly for about a year before i had the idea of manualy setting the fan speeds,

so i ended up messing with fan speeds and keeping an eye on temps, like i said. At 60% the fans are whisper quiet and the temps barely get up to 80c (anything under 90c is acceptable) the compromise was a slight underclock.

Interestingly more aggresive underclocks didnt give nearly as good results.

I looked at the card in the picture recently but i think im going to wait till the 700 series is out. at which time i will take a great interest in the stock cooling.

Incidentally there are 3rd party GPU coolers like the "Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus II" which from reviews gives very excellent results- probably lower my temps AND allowing me to overclock instead of my current underclock. but i kind of resent spending another £60 on a £300+ graphics card

At the end of the day i managed to get my PC silent for no money and it will still play games on maximum so i thought it might be interesting.

Thank you so much for the feedback.

Watching the benchmark, I wasn't unhappy with the performance, so I guess I shouldn't complain. Of course, I'd like to see things improve in the future, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought the CPU.
