Any decent 680 you got with a moderate OC would easily give you the results you are looking for. Might not even need to OC
Not the only one above 6k with gtx 480. I was able to get above 7k. It also depends on the resolution.

Same here, I've got a Maximus IV Extreme motherboard and it's also limited to 2.0 but I still get about 8600 (1920x1080 maximum settings) at stock settings and around 9200 with a decent overclock. Even with the 680 (which eats up the demo) you're still not completely saturating PCIE 2.0, so no worries there.

    The rest of my system:
    CPU: i5 2500K @5GHz
    RAM: 8GB @ 2133MHz

When comparing scores, generally all that matters for comparison is max settings and 1920x1080 and that score.

Yes at lower resolutions you can get much higher scores.

I just did a comparison between my GTX 460 SLI setup and the GTX 670 I installed today. I tried to force SLI in the Nvidia control panel but it was a NoGo.

    System Specs:

    CPU: Core i7 870 @ 4GHz (8 threads)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 670, GTX 460 (PhysX)
    RAM: 16 GB PNY DDR3 1600MHz (unganged)
    Mobo: MSI P55-GD65
    PSU: Inwin Commander 1.2kW PSU
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 120GB SSD, Seagate 2TB
    UPS: Cyber Power 1500AVR
    Cooling: Corsair H100

    GTX 460 SLI benchmark Score 2635 | Average Framerate:20.758 | Performance:Fairly High | Screen Size: 1920x1200 | Graphics Presets: Maximum

    GTX 670 FTW benchmark Score 6811 | Average Framerate:58.596 | Performance:Very High | Screen Size: 1920x1200 | Graphics Presets: Maximum

    Overclock GPU to 1100MHz | Average Framerate:67.752 | Performance:Extremely High |

Thanks for all the feed back every one, I think the only logical thing for me to do based on the feedback is to upgrade to the 680, I'm confident now that I should reach scores of about 8k-9k.

Going to upgrade in a few weeks once I get a few pay checks, will keep you guys posted on the results ^^
