I think the style of the Midlanders Race gear will not fit the "barbaric" style and lore of Highlander, just saying. It looks too civilized and garish for Highlander's lifestyles. Highlander, to me, is almost the 6th race; the most different looking than the other subcategories of the other 4 races.

A Highlander can be fancy ! Joke aside, you're right. . . . Ever from the begining of FFXIV I've felt like SE made 2 very different model types for Hyur males (Midlander & Highlander) and they couldn't decide which to use in game so they came up with an idea to make one of them a separate clan.

    Highlander, no love for you!

When I saw the Colisseum gears, it gave me ideas.

Since Highlanders are mostly sellswords and merceneries that used to live in mountains, I expect them to support cold weather but not heat. Living now in cities, they shouldn't wear something that covers too much skin. I ended up thinking about a desert like scarf/cape covering the shoulders or somekind of fur scarf/cape for the body leaving the arms and most of the torso uncovered (something like what Piccolo wears in Dragonball Z). For the legs, some kind of big skin belt or fur with normal lightweight pants covering the knees completely but stopping after that. For the feet, heavy skin or fur boots. For the gloves, fingerless linen-like gloves reinforced on the backhand with hard leather or scales making them flexible and protected. For the hat, you can use a turban for the desert RSE or a fur hat for the fur RSE but anyway, you all know that Highlanders prefer to show their head completely.

    To resume:

    Desert-Sellsword-RSE
Head: Turban or nothing at all
Body: Scarf/cape-like cloak in cloth covering shoulders (most of torso uncovered)
Hands: Linen-like fingerless gloves reinforced with shells
Legs: Big leather belt with knee-covered half-pants
    Boots: Coeurl-skin boots

    Mountain-Mercenary-RSE
Head: Fur hat or Wolf/Bear head hood or nothing at all
Body: Scarf/cape-like cloak in fur covering shoulders (most of torso uncovered)
Hands: Linen-like fingerless gloves reinforced with hard leather
Legs: Big leather&fur belt with knee-covered halfpants
    Boots: Leather&fur boots

    So, what do yo think?

**For those wondering... it's a Dragonball drawing but it illustrates my point even though the cape I'd want would definitely be very short and the rest of the torso would be uncovered **

FFXIV, uses normal mapping and lighting tricks to give us nice smooth looking characters with a few knobbly bits here and there. This lets us see lots on the screen at one time. (Low poly count = Higher FPS = More Models on screen)

Now for capes, they have to be physical, for XIV's standard this would take a while to implement correctly.

    Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkKr4q9W8oM
    Skip to 2:40

It looks easy, but its not...getting it just right requires work. But DAM would it be nice...

FFXIV 1.0 did have physics for cloth, but nothing to the extent of long-clothed free flowing objects.

A cape is indeed something amazing but hard to implement ( I can still hope for it... lol). A drape could also work instead of a cape (just covering the neck and shoulders). Easier to do but still stylish.

Although a kilt would be great, don't forget that Midlanders get their own stripper boots as starting gear :3
