Since Yoshi and some of the dev team is on tour doubt they will start it when he is away. He still has that live letter to talk about the beta on the 22nd.

Live letter with Beta on and him on a random server ( hope it's the server I'm on) and were going to party in a Dungeon and party like it's no tomorrow.

It'd be much more easier and efficient for him to be there when beta starts though he doesn't need to be there, but we've yet to get the benchmark, which is coming before the test. The themes of the letter is the beta test and launch, so there's a good possibility they're only talking about the phases then talking about what may come at launch including a release period of summer or fall.

they might as well have sent out invites during media tour. and people could have started playing earlier; and he could have talked about beta during beta. They posted Alpha vids during entire alpha, and had live letters during alpha. so there's no logical reason to postpone beta, just because somehow he needs to have live letter before that.
People may argue that it's better if Yoshi is at office, when they start it; and i guess that makes sense...but really, they aren't crippled without him. They could have set a plan for opening beta beforehand.
Now the reason it was postponed was because they took some extra time to polish, and add some extra stuff for us to try, so it didn't really have anything to do with live letter, or media tour.
