I agree with OP, SE needs to be careful not to make quest grinding wash rinse repeat etc. I love socializing in MMO and if that is gone from it I might as well just play a single player game or go play monster hunter by myself.

This statement is as real as the dooms day predictions if 1.0 launch didn't make you do that no matter what ARR does wont either...no matter what it is they can only improve they can't go any lower thus anyone able to post in this forum stating this is false and threat-less
Little late to be concerned about this isn't it? I'm ok with a quest based system I do hope exp parties are still viable at a speed equivalent or above solo questing though. (Not that I have much left to level at this point)
I didn't leave Tera because of the "quest grinding" I left Tera because the monster designs just got way toooo "WEIRD" for me.
Lol, as someone who played Requiem, I didn't mind. I actually found it kind of interesting how the zones changed and they slowly went from making me feel like I was playing an anime game, to feeling like I was playing Requiem. But the quest grinding quickly overshadowed that.
I totally agree with the OP. I've been complaining about this with every MMO I've played since WoW came out. The freedom and feeling of adventure is gone and replaced with a linear grind that drags from level 1 to end game while your eyes glaze over from reading hundreds of paragraphs of filler text written simply to get you there.
One of the problems with quest based leveling is that it requires SO many to get you through to the end that they can't possibly make all of them interesting. In my experience, there will be one or two out of hundreds that are amusing and the rest are just another boring link in the chain. It also puts blinders on players and teaches them to concentrate on finding the "!" marks and ignore everything else. It's hard to feel immersed in a fantasy world when that becomes the focus. It also severely limits re-playability because after finally drudging through all of those quests who wants to take the time to go through it all again? They always feel fun at first but at some point, usually about half way for me, it starts to get old and I move on to something else.
They should limit the number of quests to an amount where they can be scripted with quality and provide a unique experience. Have them be a fun and rewarding distraction for when you don't feel like playing with others, but don't make them the focus in a genre that is about adventuring with other people! It's those connections to other players that keep me coming back to a game even after I've become bored with the content.
Give me an open sandbox world with a story and let me find my own path through it. I'll take that over these 'modern' MMOs any day of the week.
