oh lemme jump on the train before it's too late.
data centers for UK, france and germany please.
i mean how can you translate the game for those regions and not place a data centre there.
i know i know! that should go without saying.

Don't "phew thanks" so fast.
Geographical lag most certainly was an issue- it was just harder to notice because of all the server side processing lag. East coast users (assuming the data center is on the west coast, near SE headquarters) will still experience a probably unnoticeable bit of network lag, but it will still be worlds better than connecting to Japan.
Also: All servers are still "international." You can join any server you want. The only difference is their physical location in the real world.
because they don't need to. These countries are not far enough apart for it to matter or be worth it. The severs are by region, not by language. Wherever they locate the data center, you'll probably still have a 100 ping or less. vs like a 400-500 ping to Japan.i mean how can you translate the game for those regions and not place a data centre there.

Okay, that's good to know. I remember when Yoshi-P played in German he didn't notice any lag from Japan servers (maybe it was less population). I will be mad if NA-only server is the only choice I can get.Don't "phew thanks" so fast.

I don't think it will be needed, I live in Richmond, VA and I can ping to well managed servers in LA with only about 80ms. Yeah YMMV on your ISP but if they plan to make the game servers be accessible internationally they will have the game with "optimal" ping to be around 200~250.
So making sub-regions out of regions while are nice for the player, it just makes it harder to manage for the networking department. Let's not forget that these servers outside of Japan will not be directly managed by Square but by a third party, if I remember correctly from the NICO stream a couple of weeks ago.
I don't call people bad names but I can make them mad... Welcome to the dark side!
Anyways, I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and I used a video-to-video client with my deaf Japanese friend while playing COD on the PS3 without lag...
SE would logically place servers in their Datacenters that already exist to save money. So most likely they will be located in Los Angeles. I have no idea the size of this datacenter or if there is one actually here. I just assume there is because that's where their office is located.
SE does have a Montreal DataCenter I noticed from this: http://www.investquebec.com/en/index.aspx?page=3119 so it's possible to have eastern servers. I actually would love this because I'm right next door in Ottawa.
I did read this that makes Montreal a logical location:
"The facility will service all of Square Enix's North American development studios (Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal and Crystal Dynamics, in California)."

Oh cool I have family over there.
To be fair our fiber layout in central and coastal VA is excellent compared to other states in the east coast.
pfft, why just US west/east? why not NW, NE, SW, SE, Central, Midwest? or just one for every state? or every county? fk it, just make it a single player game, zero lag that way!![]()
That's cool, thanks for the link! ^^SE would logically place servers in their Datacenters that already exist to save money. So most likely they will be located in Los Angeles. $$$$ waste for SE lol. Yes, forget it and let's enjoy a single player game with bots. :P
Ah yeah, I remember when I did PvP in PSO on Xbox Live, it always booted me out of servers everytime we tried. I thought SE got new servers that would work better? Indeed, if you want open-world PvP then we would need one server in our location though.you just didn't percieve it. your definitely had at least 1/3 of a second lag (300+ms). Not a lot, but a better ping than that from the eastern US is pretty much unpossible. In a video chat, that's not a lot, but in a game where fast reactions may be important, it is everything. FFXIV probably won't end up being that twitchy, but if you're doing PvP, it will have an impact.
