NopeAha, well, then it could be helpful for you by knowing which server to avoid.
I can't comprehend why there would be any negativity about this. To be clear, in case I wasn't... which I thought I was... heading to said server would be completely voluntary. No one would want reuniting with friends to be made easier?
I rather thrown into some random server, make an alias, and start adventuring with new faces/names
Besides, player most likely will change their name

I actually agree... When I get into the beta, that's exactly what I'll do. Since I already know how I'll design my character in ARR, it would be interesting to experiment with other races and names...

Oh, and I don't think you'll get thrown into some random server.
From the 39th producer letter (Nov. 30, 2012):
You choose a server when you create your test character. So my idea was just a way of evenly distributing players while giving them the find-1.0-friends-if-they-like-that-idea option.Originally Posted by Yoshi
A Request to Alpha Testers
With official service for Version 1.0 having come to a close, we want as many people as possible to have the chance to participate in the Alpha Test. As such, I would like to make a request to all testers, both present and future.
As I mentioned earlier, the Alpha Test is limited in scope. If players were to flock to a certain world, it would generate unprecedented levels of server stress, which would in turn make it difficult for us to increase the number of testers.
At present, the Alpha Test is being conducted on two worlds: Chocobo and Moogle. If you’re not already testing on Moogle, we ask that you please create a new character and play there instead. As for those who join the fray after December 3, we would be grateful if you could elect to play on the new world that is due to go online. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

We speculated a week or two ago that we'll all be in the same servers we previously in 1.0 for the main release and they'll just add new servers for new players. So that'll likely be true for phase 3 and 4. This is because they said that we won't get world transfer at release (I think) and if they let us choose servers to transfer our character to it will probably mark the end of a lot of link shells. I doubt there will be any server merges of the existing 1.0 servers unless they get bigger servers...Oh, and I don't think you'll get thrown into some random server.

It is my most anticipated information, because re-gathering with friends/linkshells is of utmost importance to me.
My question for the final live letter, which was not answered, was this:
It got 26 likes. ^^; I would still LOVE an answer to this question. Certainly by Beta phases 3 or 4.
EDIT: My belief and understanding of previous official posts is that:
We will arrive on our existing server. We will then, or later, have the option to transfer to another server (one-time free of charge.) It makes NO sense to me that they would have us (blindly) select a server upon logging in our existing characters. That would be utter hodge-podge and random loss of friends and linkshells, especially now that we know there will be over 20 servers.
IF they will have us CHOOSE a server upon logging into ARR, then certainly a list of servers and their regions should be up well in advance.
I still hope and believe we will simply land on our existing servers, allowing us to re-connect, and then as a group decide if server hopping is desired.
I was referring to the early test phases here though. It's cool that no one agrees with me though. We'll all be with our friends/linkshells soon enough at re-launch.
