The difference is that .hack was never popular as SAO is.I watched SAO, it was very good. I have no idea if SAO caused more people to watch the stream. I think us MMO players can relate to SAO very easy, however people not familiar with MMOs may not. SAO theme is not new, .hack//sign has the same theme probably not a popular since it is a lot older.
Maybe everyone wants to be a Beater(Beta Cheater) now

That doesn't mean it's more popular. It means it has a publisher willing to pump a lot in it. Just to make an example the SAO light novel series was the top selling this year in Japan. .Hack has been rather popular, but never broke any records that I know of.

As much as I love this new anime (and I never really watched animes but stumbled over this one) I'm not sure about its influence on FFXIV.
Personally though I really look forward to playing XIV and I can't fully discount that watching the whole series made me remember how I made close friends I still talk to and carry from game to game to this day, almost 9 years later, whom I've never even met in real life.

OP....this is your fault, getting me hooked on another anime! This series is genius! An anime about a virtual, mmo world... who would have thunk it...
going back to episode one now.![]()
