The PS3 version has its own downscaled models and textures, and it doesn't influence in any way the PC version. In the same way, the PS Vita version would have its own streamed locally in its own memory. It wouldn't influence either the PC version or the PS3 version in any way.

The PS Vita can handle whatever game you throw at it. All you need to do is to have its own dedicated textures fit the memory bandwidth (which is very high for a portable), and its own dedicated models stay under 133 million polygons per second.

Considering that assets are entirely local to the platform, there's absolutely no influence on the other platforms. Just as the PS3 version doesn't in any way "ruin" the capabilities of the PC version, a PS Vita version would do the same.

Some old FFXI users have the misguided misconception that a less powered platform badly influences the PC version of games due to how FFXI was developed.

The large difference is that the PS2 version of FFXI was developed *before* the PC version, and the PC version was ported from it.

This means that the PS2 version did limit the PC version in the fact that it was almost a straight conversion of PS2 assets.

When you downscale starting from the PC version for other platforms, the process is entirely different, and the PC version isn't negatively affected in any way.
Your absolutely right. However there is still a memory limitation to the amount of characters that can be visible on the screen at one time. PS3 can handle this fine, however the Vita may not because it's memory limitations are even more extreme. Plus your limiting the bandwidth pipeline to wireless ONLY. That could be troublesome if you happen to be in a unreliable wireless network. Which are notorious for high latency and disconnects on MMO's.

I like your idea, and your right there is no reason why it wouldn't work. However I'm not sure the potential audience on the Vita since it is still fairly new is worth the investment and trouble for Square Enix. I assure you they will be very cautious after FFXIV launch flop on any other risky development adventures!

It would be better if they developed for the PS4.

However Yoshida, had hinted in the past about potential mobile solutions. Like LS chat, Auction House management, Character transfer/changes, etc... couldn't think of anymore possibilities.

The Vita has more system memory than the PS3 @ 512MB while it does have less VRam @128MB. this is not an issue as your not driving 1920x1080 display. 128MB VRam is fine maybe even overkill for a 960 × 544 Display.

Ah, been awhile since I looked at Vita specs, and I don't own one. Thanks for the info. Regardless, I was thinking about it and I suppose they would just apply more aggressive Level of Detail models to the game to handle the increase of players and mitigate the memory limitations.
