Oh wait a minute, I think someone already did that.
Except that the successful MMO formula isn't to clone WoW, it's to copy what WoW DID when it came out. It took good things from different MMOs, stayed away from the things that didn't work so well, threw in some things people wanted, and BOOM! MMO success.

SE doesn't need to copy WoW, it needs to copy what WoW did. Bit of a difference.

    Let's make some sense..

The world is not black and white. The entire argument that only one group should be interested in this game will be one-sided, lacking foresight and plainly.. never good.

Look at the situation through SE's shoes. They're working dilligently at improving a game for free that should be bringing them an income. It currently isn't. You can blame it on the previous game development team but if blaming is all we can do, we don't deserve to see them succeed. Either way, when the improvements are done, do you think they want to tap into the smaller market of FF fans or a larger, more global market of casual MMO players AND FF fans?

Every Final Fantasy title has a few things in common: Cid, Chocobos, Moogles, Guardians/Avatars(some, not all), epic storyline, constantly changing battle system and consistently different worlds. Those differences made Final Fantasy and the quality of the games kept us coming back. Is it so much of a stretch if FFXIV gained a whole new market simply by being the next-gen MMO that FFXI never was? Hm... let me think on that...

Agreed. Really it should probably be a split with the majority leaning towards the classic Final Fantasy side of things (Possibly a 60/40) . The current environment is similar to FFIV-VI with a little bit of IX, so they should focus on invoking a similar feel to those games, both story and equipment wise.

I think the game should be tailored to people in general, no need to be a racist on way or another >

    I say ff fans.
    The reason?

all these "main stream" mmo are losing the point of what, to me, mmo are. MMo now a days are all about fast pace game play and getting to "end game" as quickly as possible. I hate this concept. What would be the point in paying for a game that you "beat" in a mnth? As in hit level cap.

The example of DCUO, ppl consider it a AAA title. You hit 30 in roughly 3 days then grind gear. No one wants the lvl cap to increase. And most of anything is for 30+. The "elitist" took the game over quick and now even if you lvl 30, you still are required certain gear to do much of the content.

Fast pace, end game only mmo in my honest opinion have bad communities. I played Aion for 6 mnths. The community on there is aweful. If you have an issue with being "ganked" (its a pvp only game) you are told by your own faction: "So? get better or quit carebear". You are also told that no one under 25 can join guilds. Asking will get you flamed. (community rule not game rule)

the problem is people are trying to make this thread that argument but if you read the title then you will see the question is who the game should be tailored to not who should be interested in it.

Its a part of the FF franchise and FF world, it should obviously be developed around the FF world and tailor to FF fans. Just because it is tailored to FF fans does not mean it wont appeal to those new to Final Fantasy but will be a turn off to those who hate FF (which it should be). There are enough MMOs out there that are not FF games. Why should one of two FF MMOs not tailor to FF fans but the general public. It makes zero sense at all.

Yeah, nothing wrong with your logic.
you should read a post carefully before you attempt a rimshot at someone
i didnt say they shouldnt consider the western MMO players opinions, i said they shouldnt bend the the game just to please them without considering if its really a must have in a game (free jumping, dozends of flying mounts, open world PK *aka I GANKED YA* just to name a few examples)
there is alot to gain from every playerbases opinion but if you bend the game too much in order to please all, the outcome is most likely dissapointment for all

At this point, the only people playing this game (myself included) were FFXI players and have always been FF fans. Anyone can see, plain as day, that the old team tried to tailor to MMO fans, and not who they should have been making this game for. . .the FF fans.

Now I'm not saying FFXIV should be a FFXI clone, but looking at this game in it's current state makes you question who the target demographic really was. While you can't place all the blame on the new team, the new patch (1.16 I believe it's called) was an absolute slap to the face of FF fans the world over. Are nearsighted 12 year olds the only ones still interested in the game? Are monsters REALLY that hard to see? The quest(s) that were put out, all of which look and play exactly the same as the last, are so terrible that they're not even worth doing.

I'm starting to rant here so I'll try to rap it up. Fact of the matter is this; they tried to tailor this game to MMO fans, that didn't seem to work, but at the same time enraged FF players. At this point, either they try to tailor the game to FF fans in a hurry, or just wrap it up and call this game dead.

Some of you are aiming at the wrong direction, read the title closely before assuming this game should appeal MMO players first before FF fans. If XIV should appeal to anyone it's XI player base who to this very day are holding on by a thread and I do speak for myself.
There are lots of other MMO, pick one this is Final Fantasy.
