Secondly, any pay2play game or even former AAA games gone f2p out there that has direct patching from their servers (read almost all of them) work 100% fine and are fast and efficient.. Take your pick.

People that play MMOs other than XI know this.
i did not say, "you said they do better on patch day" or whatever just that it was at least terrible on patch day.
and in the end it all comes down to how fast and reliable the connection on patch day is be cause thats what makes ppl angry if its not smooth.

Don`t know about those "other" MMO's. Diablo3 at least uses a P2P network too.
And i just read WoW uses P2P to update too.

That being said, SE really should give us a better XIV patcher this time.
XI used direct download. P2P is the way to go we just need a better patcher, or use utorrent.

Yep. WoW does use P2P. It is one of the few who do and they do it because it is cheaper for the company.

P2P is bad for users who can't use it due to their ISP like a previous poster. It is also exploitable and people go through a third party P2P client so that they can download only and not have to upload to everyone else. Get enough people doing that and you end up with legitimate updaters taking forever to patch their client. Not to mention that outside of patch days there is nobody sharing the files save the original seed server, which uploads like a molasses drip on a February morning.

You can add SWTOR, Aion, DCUO, iRO to the list of games that use torrent as well. Its pretty hard to find a game that doesn't use it, since its cheaper for the company if your using your clients upstream to help distribute patches.

Tell that to people who have ISPs that throttle (most of them) P2P traffic, or in some cases completely block it (the torrent protocol is mostly used for pirating software due to how it works it makes it harder to track than a direct download).

Isn't it illegal for ISPs to block peer to peer cause its unconstitutional since your blocking free speech? I remember Comcast tried doing it for a month, they got hit with a class action lawsuit, had to pay like $16 to any subscribers who signed up for settlement money. Cost them 16m total

I know I have comcast and any torrent stuff is not slow at all.

Actually there is torrent downloaders for PS3. Download DCUO from the PS3 store. First thing you do is download the downloader then it opens up the torrent downloader.

i would contact my ISP and tell them "what the hell" and then ask "nicely" to open my ports.
No seriously if there is no terrorist using your connection or you are sending mass spam mails, they have no right and reason to block them.

But i understand and see where you are coming from.

it seems a few more MMO are using like SWTOR, Aion, DCUO, iRO.

ISP can be a hassle but its your (sorry) problem, you need to contact your ISP to order them to open those ports. They cant block them unless you give them a reason to. They cant just assume you are pirating lol.

Of course you theoreticly could use a 3rd party programm an restrict your upload speed, but what kind of asshole does that.

Thats why i am saying, if we get a better patcher there is no need for 3rd party programms.
I know it sucks if your ISP makes trouble and a smooth direct download would be awesome, but cost effective it just doesnt cut it.

Possibly in the US but not in other countries. Different countries have different laws, for example the UK's laws against guns would be seen as unconstitutional in the US because the constitution says people have the right to bare arms. (paraphrased)

I have heard a lot on these forums about people having problems with patches because their isp blocks torrent traffic, the idea being because torrents are the main ways pirates download videos, software etc block it and they won't download.

I know a lot of ISPs throttle P2P traffic in the UK as well.
