I too have paid for WoW my subscription is still current in that game, but they actually have a lot of content to do so its worth it.I payed for 10 years of FFXI and 8 years of WoW so far together o.O and I'm still not going I've been able to afford 2 games no prob... 30 bucks a month is not really a dent and I'm a 21 year old college student... so I don't drink and party every other night I rather game instead oh well o.O

then what are you crying for you didnt have to pay for FFXIV or play FFXI for a sub price... hell if your going to say that then why did you pay at all when you knew there was no content your logic makes no sense... so shouldn't you withhold your judgement on the model until you actually see ARR on release? Instead of assuming its going to bomb again?

I have no problem paying for something thats good however. I seen F2P games that offered more then 1.0.then what are you crying for you didnt have to pay for FFXIV or play FFXI for a sub price... hell if your going to say that then why did you pay at all when you knew there was no content your logic makes no sense... so shouldn't you withhold your judgement on the model until you actually see ARR on release? Um if you didn't know... v1.0 is done with... and thus has no real hold on what v2.0 will be like since v2.0 is totally new. Also on your note of F2P games having more... I will tell you this... I have played pretty much every single MMO P2P and F2P that has come out... why because I like doing that... I PLAY ALL THE GAMES!!! literally... all the games...
Do you know that I stick with P2P games much much longer and in fact I normally have 5 P2P games going at one time... do you know how fast I go through all those F2P games? Now why do you think it is hmmm? because silly they are boring as hell and there is nothing to them at all... NOTHING!
So I wish for them to keep this game P2P at least that way I will know it wont be a waste of my time like all those other pathetic F2P games...
You can run along to all of those... please... go ahead... run now...

Wasn't 1.0 FTP for most of its life anyway?
2.0 is a new, completely seperate release in my eyes. And getting it free to me is kindda like SE saying, sorry I know ffXIV was bad, here have a copy of FFXV on the house! I will willingly pay subscription fees as long as they game is good and keeps me rolling and since I consider it a new game I will expect just that, what an mmo is before it has an expansion.
However games like GW2 which are ftp but have the in-game store where you can buy whatever you need, do not get any money from me because I dont use the store option...ever. And other games I tried that were ftp got stale fast and had more in-game problems than any ptp I have experienced. Comparing ARR to WoW, XI or any established older game is just a silly arguement. You cant expect 10 years worth of content at release.

I just have to chime in on this, because remarks like the bolded part drive me up the wall. However games like GW2 which are ftp but have the in-game store where you can buy whatever you need, do not get any money from me because I dont use the store option...ever. Guild Wars 2 is not free to play. You (or someone else) had to buy GW2 in order for you (or them) to play it. Without having purchased a copy of the game, you can not create an account of your own, login or play. When you have to spend money to acquire something, it's not free.
The key word here is "Free". It's a very important term when you're categorizing a game as "Free to Play", "Buy To Play" or "Pay To Play".
I understand people say "F2P" as in "no subscription", but that's not what F2P means. A F2P MMO is one like Perfect World, or Allods, or Runes of Magic, where you can download, install, login, create a character and play without having to buy anything. Those are the games that rely entirely on cash shop sales to stay afloat, and those are the ones that really limit the gameplay experience in order to drive more microtransactions.

On another note, I think it would be a good idea for them to offer some kind of ongoing trial period, like up to a certain level or perhaps a trial after your subscription has ended for a couple weeks or something. Just to lower the barrier of entry. The barrier of entry to FFXI has always been way too high.

A good 14 day trial that allows players to dive in and get a good feel for the game, the pacing, the types of content and such would be just fine. They could even make it an "endless trial" with the limitation of only being able to, say, do stuff within a couple of the starting areas, like Gridania, Central and Western Shroud or something.Mediocrity Online initial subscribers:

Put restrictions on /tells, sending mail, /shouts and such so RMT can't abuse it.
Allow them to do so without having to enter any credit card information.
Voila, a perfectly good way to test-drive the game without having to make any commitments or investments.
