I have a hard time with the idea that people want to get married for "fun". Honestly, that is the kind of stuff you see people doing when they are 10 like playing kitchen. I don't exactly see people 12-22 getting together to pretend to get married outside a game, so I don't know that there is a large population of people who want to do it for that reason. Certainly, the people who are empassioned about the same-sex subject are not in here showing their support for "fun".

Additionally, I don't think you can really call it a "social feature". This makes it seem like there is going to be this regular event where people get married over and over again for fun. It is definately a feature which paints a picture of eorzean society (which is where some of the same-sex arguments come from). But given that they don't have plans to implement devorce (not yet anyways), It definatly speaks to the perminance and importance of marriage as an institute even in a game.

I would also like to state that, on a personal note, such a laissez faire approach to something that I find important conceptually, regardless of the medium, is not only sad but kind of a representation as to why many right-wing individuals view subjects like this as the deterioration of marriage.

Yes, it is a social feature as it is a social activity. Regular occurrence and social feature are not mutually exclusive to one another. If it is permanent or not is also not relevant to it being a social feature.

On a personal note myself in reply to yours, as one who believes in life long monogamy and finds marriage to be an important aspect of human life that deserves utmost repect, marriage in a video game does not devalue it whatsoever and I find it silly to say otherwise.

I would be all for same gender marriage, but on the business side, it is very controversial to have. While some countries embrace the idea and practice of it, other countries who subscribe to the game may have a very strict teachings against it, and because of that, they would not play the game. I don't believe SE wants to put anything in that would run the risk of losing their customers. I am sure if SE could choose without any consequence, they would let you, but I 100% understand where they come from on this, and would decide that myself.

And if they simply don't call it marriage, it's not against anyone's teachings. As others have stated it doesn't even need to explicitly imply any kind of romantic or intimate relationship.

Doubt anyone in game is going to complain about the rate of handfast reverts. Lol

Though creating semi binding / probhibitive measures to dissuade making handfast a wonton choice would be nice lol ( Gil prices is one way)

because Bioware is a western game, not a japanese game. Also, they had lesbian sex. Not Gay marriage. Most people, gamers especially, are far more accepting of just lesbian sex.

p.s. how does "2cool4tubes" sound as a term for people who like to emphasize their internet lingo in posts in which it has absolutely no context, I'm toying around with a few phrases because using "gb2" gets a little complicated considering all the places people can pick that sort of thing up, "anonycool" and "interedgy" are another couple that I think could have potential

You can find it silly. I never said I thought it devalued it. What I said was that it fuels the fire that creates the controversy and that THEY think it devalues it. If right-wing conservatives and culturalists didn't have ammo to take issue with it, then they wouldn't.
