You dont want others to desire things sometimes. We be jealous.
You know, I have had this discussion with my wife. If my daughter decided she wanted to strip for money, my only concern would be that it is in a safe place, not that she was taking her clothes off to make money.

If she thinks it will get her what she wants in this world then go for it. My job is to protect her from harm, let her make mistakes, and support her in her choices. And no, I do not innately consider her stripping as "harm".

While I may not have been overly sexualized I was still reprimanded verbally and textually in my early XIV gaming, so sexualization truly does go both ways.

As a Highlander who leveled GLA, MRD, and PUG I was inclined to wear the harness set in the beginning stages of my leveling career. I liked the extra DEX on the subligar and how all the pieces fit together as set. They were all around the same level as well and I could upgrade them every 10 levels. Because I wanted to keep my inventory down while still maximizing my effectiveness across classes, I felt that this set would best suit my needs.

I was not taken seriously by my fellow players. I was the goofy "gay" Highlander who always wore subligar. I had people make fun of my character in ventrilo even by prominent members of the XIV community. I literally had someone reprimand me in /sh at an Aetheryte in disgust because I was a Highlander wearing subligar. I was also denied party invites because of it. Sexualization isn't always flattering and when you tie stats to certain gear, making that sexualized gear better needlessly encourages you to look a certain way in front of others.

I'm personally not gay, nor do I have a problem with gay people. I don't like being looked at as something I'm not and I don't think I should have to sacrifice my efficiency needlessly when the developers could implement a vanity option. I mostly don't agree with the people who made the comments or acted the way that they did. I personally think they were at the core of the over sexualization but I can't say it was completely unexpected and I shouldn't hold the developers responsible for the actions of bigoted or inexperienced individuals. I wasn't necessarily aesthetically proud to put that subligar on at the time but the set favored the classes I wanted to play and I liked the stats. I can feel for the female gamers that probably have many more instances of this when leveling their characters.

It's not the aesthetics so much as the negative reaction from the community. If the community is going to predictably act in such a manner we as players should have a method to counter it in my opinion.

This is a thread about sexism: (define - discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex.)
Not sexiness: (define - Arousing or tending to arouse sexual desire or interest.)

No problem here with sexiness. Problem is with sexism thread is getting very de-railed by people misunderstanding this.

I don't know why you felt offended. It seems like you could have just as easily been ok with being the goofy "gay" Highlander. Sounds like you actually were disturbed by being called a little fruity. Im a terribly large man and I dressed up as a school girl once for halloween. You should learn to get the comedy in it instead of taking it seriously.

If more people would just let that stuff be funny instead of taking insult to so much stuff, the world would have much less arguements and issues with people's feelings.

I don't have a problem with Female or Male PCs wearing next to nothing if thats what the player wants, but I know that there is quite a lot less male gear that is even nearly as skimpy as the female counterpart. It's not difficult to play a fully dressed male or female, but a barely dressed male can be harder to pull off. Just make it equal I say. And hey, if someone wants to make a super buff female PC, that should be allowed too xD (although I doubt it will be easy to do)

The gear you talk about... it is less useful than you think it is. You certainly can't point to the GC coats since their neck to knee coverage conflicts with your confirmation bias.

Screw them, held your head high and be proud of your subligar!
