There's an MMO called Cloud Nine (Holic) that implemented same-sex marriage and the world didn't implode. My vote is FOR same-sex marriage.

I can't help but to laugh at people when they talk about the sanctity of marriage.
That 'sanctity' is long gone in almost every marriage.
Must I remind some people that marriage was primarily used as a way for a man to gain several wives and have ownership of all of their belongings?
It was never this happy-sappy bond which you're told by (assumedly) parents/ministers.
Please keep your indoctrination out of our lives
- Also I really agree with the idea of not calling it marriage, or having a completely different ceremony. Not because I'm against same-sex marriage, but because this tradition shouldn't be the same in Eorzea.
We have twelve gods. Can't we base a ceremony around one, or all of them?
Maybe we can have a 'Priest of the Twelve'.

I actually outright whined when I read this post. I was close to sobbing. Don't take offense when I say this, but this is a very thoughtless post. I don't think you're thoughtless, perhaps you just had a lapse of judgement.
We are playing a game in a fantasy setting with violence, murder, sabotage, drinking (heavily), sexual innuendo all over the place, I think there were even a few cutscenes which alluded to rape, and far more. Hell, the entire seventh umbral era focused on the end of the world and the deaths of thousands of people, something very dark in itself.
You are worried about marriage.
Did you even stop to consider the fact that you're playing with tons of people from all over the world that will happen to talk about absolutely anything? People are gonna swear, flame, and talk about strange topics. Hell, chances are they're gonna come across or even participate in cybersex. Teens tend to do that.
It's a game. They're gonna be exposed to far more worse things than "marriage" and I'm sure they will be just fine.
Not to be light of a situation, but are we seriously talking about marriage in a fantasy game as if it has any effect on reality?
I think that SE will allow SSM for the simple reason the are going to allow a human and a cat person to marry. Sounds kinda close to well you get the picture. This is a game nothing more nothing less. There is no political outcry if it happens....Just like there is no outcry that a human can marry a cat person.
No one cares.
I voted for it. everyone should be treated fairly either allow it or take it from the game completely.
Don't care! BTW, another thread was JUST locked on the same subject not due to flaming but simply that they have heard enough and that no original ideas are coming from these threads so, might as well just give it a rest?
That's an awful reason to close a thread though considering almost all of the topics here have been done to death 100 times already and yet they are allowed to continue.
This is an important issue to quite a number of people and we should be allowed to voice our opinions continually. If we're not allowed to continue speaking up about it, how will the devs know that it's an issue we still care about? Going by the poll on page 1 and a large number of comments, a good portion of the community wants equal marriage in the game.
UK:
There were 723,913 live births in England and Wales in 2011, increasing slightly (by 0.1 per cent) from 723,165 in 2010
There were 484,367 deaths registered in England and Wales in 2011, compared with 493,242 in 2010 (a fall of 1.8 per cent)
In 2011, the provisional Total Fertility Rate (TFR) decreased to 1.98 children per woman from 2.00 in 2010
Age-standardised mortality rates (ASMR) in 2011 were the lowest ever recorded for England and Wales, at 6,172 deaths per million population for males and 4,402 deaths per million population for females
So births increased in 2011, and we have more people being born than dying, deaths are also decreasing, yeah we are really (at least in UK) are gonna die out, and we can't continue. Also we have the lowest ever recorded age-standardized morality rates.

Now I know the UK is small, but I have proven there are holes in your mythical facts, you are trying to prove something so show me your facts.
You are just pulling info out of your ass to rationalize discrimination.
Real-world examples probably shouldn't be referenced here; the legal/equality issues of same-sex marriage don't really apply here. (Hear me out before you start flaming me.) Please keep the real-world arguments to a minimum to prevent derailing this thread into one debating issues happening in the real-world. This is a thread about IN-GAME issues, so try to keep that frame of reference. If you want to debate real-world gay marriage, then make a new thread and debate it there.
Chances are in-game marriage will provide some small bonus to players (likely shared housing, linked inventory, etc), so restricting these bonuses to players based on CHARACTER gender in essence makes this a socio-political issue for SE. While it is a fragile topic, if indeed bonuses are applied to married couples then DISALLOWING same-sex marriage in-game also acts as a real-world statement for SE. (See my post about programming.)
I'm not sure what SE's actual stance on these issues actually is, and personally, for me to continue enjoying the game I'd honestly rather not know. However, it seems that if they wish not to openly reveal their stance, or at least make it AS AMBIGUOUS as possible, the following would be a good way of doing it:
(TLDR;)
"Any two characters will be able to marry, regardless of gender, in order to reduce any real or perceived advantages players may have for choosing to play one gender over another."
Thoughts?
A very large number of the people I've met on XIV have been gay or bi. Just sayin'...
The entire argument of "YOU shouldn't be allowed the same rights and lifestyle as ME because it makes me feel uncomfortable for no particular reason" is absolutely stupid. In no way should one person's opinion stop another person from having the same rights as someone else. Especially in terms of love, fictional or not.
