I'm fairly certain the older post had a cutoff date as well. Either way, legacy status is a way to reward those of us who stuck with the game through it's rough times and gave SE the monetary support they needed to continue development on ARR. If you wanted it that badly the info about how to qualify was up long before the cutoff date.

And the cutoff day submitted earlier was guidelines only - but these guidelines are not posted on the main page. So either way, the info wasnt readily available.

Indeed waiting perhaps wasnt the best idea - but some people only found out about it recently and then said "hey I want to do that" and joined just because of legacy. I know thats why a lot people continued to pay at least.

Regarding the 90-Day Subscription Option (06/15/2012)

As our community may be aware, FINAL FANTASY XIV offers 30-day and 90-day subscription periods. We wish to inform our players that we will be discontinuing the 90-day subscription option on Saturday, June 30, 2012. Beginning Sunday, July 1, 2012 we will only offer a 30-day subscription plan.

Fulfilling the Requirements for the Legacy Campaign

Players Currently Within the 30-Day Free Trial Period
Players who began playing as of May 2012 and have registered for a 90-day period before June 30, 2012 will be able to fulfill the requirements needed to qualify for the Legacy Campaign.

Current Players
Players who have subscribed for at least 90 cumulative days since January 6, 2012 will be able to fulfill the requirements needed to qualify for the Legacy Campaign.

Returning Players
Players who played before January 5, 2012 and wish to resume playing again will need to register for a 90-day subscription before Saturday, June 30, 2012 in order to fulfill the requirements needed to qualify for the Legacy Campaign.

We have prepared an FAQ on the forums to assist players with further questions.
Information regarding the transition from the current game to version 2.0 will be announced on the Lodestone in the future.

So You had to buy a 90days subscription plan before june 30 ...if your late then not SE fault ..its more that you didnt care about the game or game news cos you didn't see that NEWS post . And people who started after june 30 ..you didnt endure what we had when the game came out. yeah its was free for a long time before i start paying but i payed all the way

For people who dont understand its not pay 3 month consecutive ... but a 90days plan to works but that is not available since june 30 2012 ... so even if you started in july and pay july, august, september seperatly its wouldnt work... cos you had to get a 90days plan before the 30june.

and dont put hate on me cos i am legacy and not fair .. my wife when she will start to play. she wont be legacy and she not whine about it and i don't even though i'll pay the fees for her to play.

eh those were just guidelines (SE said so, and people have proven it so) - but it would have been awesome if they put something like that on the legacy page itself. Then the source of knowledge would contain the end dates - which is the biggest problem.

And you dont need 3 consecutive months or a 90 day plan.

You only need 3 months total, you could skip every other month since January and it would count.

Its down now but the main info used to be plastered to the left - but held no links or information about new information(s) that had happened.

SE has taken it down had replaced it with a compiled helping players transition link - I think that is great. I hope they continue to update that. (They did that about a week ago)

Oh not that - the top left tab "Transition . . .bla bla" used to be a legacy tab. It held nothing about cut offs except before beta starts, which makes it seem like even now you should be able to get it, even when it was late August or September (though people in early August did get it).

The cutoffs (guidelines) that were actually posted were never appended to the main tab that never left the top. So unless you happened by chance to be checking the page at the time the info was posted - would never know about the cutoffs and go into the game for something that couldn't happen anymore (legacy).

And if they only wanted people who were "up to date" on information to get legacy then they could have left the Legacy tab slide down into history as well - rather then nailing it lol :P
