Actually, that was the reason I didn't play it... or GW's PvE, I play MMOs to meet new people and so far most of those meetings were by running around the game world and bumping into them, maybe partying, helping them out or getting help myself.
Instances are nice to not having to fight for a monster or a drop, but it kills a lot of fun not seeing the other people. Open instanced leve content was a stab in the right direction, imho. This way you could still see people and help them out, but could not steal their mobs/drops.
Yes, it got messy with a lot of parties arriving at one spot, especially with the clunky targeting system, but that's fixable.

What makes this statement so stupid is that you can meet new people with content finder randomly as you would roaming thru the world, quest does this well, for some reason you seem hell bent on the only way you can meet new people is if you are:
1: Grab people for an exp party and then standing there killing the same mobs for hours, that does not fly cause you can meet plenty of new people with content finder and if you have fun with them you can friend them like normal.
2: You keep talking about world exploration but ARR gives a big reason to explore cause all the maps are foggy and quest will help you travel across the world. Sure quest wont help you fill out all of the maps but thats when you step in and do the rest your self.
Like someone said in this thread already FFXIV:ARR will be more FF like than 11 and 1.0 for a lot of reasons, but the main one for me is exploring a dungeon with friends and getting to the end to beat the final boss, and getting lots of exp and having fun while i do it.
All the suppose die heart FF fans make me laugh when they say this. FF has been one of the few games that hardly ever changes much but they just do small tweaks the combat system and then they pop out a new story. I'll tell you how to beat every FF up to 10 Attack command > are you hurt if so use Cure. that's all this series has been and has never really changed and its the reason its suffering right now cause all the fans are stuck in the past, FF 13 battle system was a breath of fresh air to me but could have been executed better with a none auto battle command. And guess what, I don't play those games that don't try something different, I like originality, I get that you have to have some core things with each game, but why do the same thing that EVERYONE does. Seriously, quest grinding, mob grinding, instances(I don't know one mmo without an instance). Raise the bar a little bit ya? That's all I'm asking for.

It's a shame I have to thrust myself into instanced content to meet new people, good luck when those friends you meet cross server want to do something that isn't in a instance you can invite them to.

It's a shame you have thrust your self in tot he world walking aimlessly to find people. Finding people thru content finder or meeting them during a quest you may be doing in the OPEN WORLD or finding them thru a search list is all the same. So sick of people acting every friend they ever made in a mmo was them walking thru a area randomly, if you meet that many people that way, at some point you was looking for someone to friend not randomly finding them.
Everyone I befriended on an MMO was mostly just randomly meeting them in an odd place and helping each other out, later we party and make more friends and so on and so forth. It's a shame you have thrust your self in tot he world walking aimlessly to find people. It's stupid that I again have to wait for a thing to pop up and say HEY YOU GOT A PARTY HEAD TO THE DUNGEON NOW~ Lets not forget, some classes will have to wait for hours to get a party, because LOL who wants something that doesn't work well in the dungeon?
Meet people that I will never again play with, or let alone gives them an excuse to be a dick.
Also, it's not exploration when someone is holding my hand saying, "hey, over here! Ok, now go this way, ok ok, now, this is tough, you have to get through these monsters that aggro, WATCH OUT! Phew that was close!" That's not exploration that's me being the games dummy. OoOOOoOOO uncover a map! Why can't I just go buy a map that someone made already? I get why they did this soo it's a false beliefe that you are going off the beaten path, but it's just another; "hey complete this area 100% move to the next! Oh, and don't come back!"
Seriously? You call that fun? I might as well watch the game play itself.

No but I did often make friends with people after I have played with them not just once, but multiple times. If I see a person sharing the same interests as I do, farming, world exploration, party play.
Then yeah they often end up finding their way into my Linkshell or Friends list. Content finder wont do that for you because your not playing with your server, you wont see a large group of people you meet outside those instanced dungeons, you don't see those people in the rest of the world.
It's hard to befriend someone when your too busy focusing lazer right on instanced raids, hell you don't usually got much of a chance to even talk if your doing things properly. So yeah I find seeing people on my server in the open world far better than finding them through a list.
Maybe you don't that's your perogative but don't tell me how I should fell about how the game evolves. Your entitled to your opinion as much as I am to mine, I don't "Look" for friends in a MMO I just naturally gravitate towards people who share my interests within the game and want to do more than just knock out instanced raids and quests.

Features in games that have been done to death:
Graphics: - Seriously, when was the last time they made a game without graphics? Text games back in the day didn't have to have graphics to be fun. Why not have a game with just sound and no graphics? That'd be original, at least.
Music: - This little dinosaur is as old as time itself, and yet we're still dragging it around with us. Why can't we get a game that plays that noise dial-up modems make instead? Or maybe the sound of alleycats fighting?
Input Devices: - Seriously? Why does every game in existence rely on input devices? The Kinect even uses a huge camera doohicky that interprets your movement. Sure, the input device itself changes now and then, but it's old hat. We need something new.
Lack of Pain: - With the exception of really horrible games like Atari's E.T. and Superman 64, there are no games that cause any measure of pain to the player as a gameplay mechanic.
Polygons: - You know, polygons had a great run back when they first came out, but now it's just old hat. We've seen it before, and you're not impressing anyone no matter how many of them you can fit on a screen. It's right up there with the next one on the list...
Pixels: - HO-LAY-CRAP these are overused. Seriously people, it's 2012! Why are we still using relics from the prehistoric period of the computer era?? Get with the program!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
All kidding aside, the point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter whether or not it's been done before, it matters whether or not it's done well.
Please try to remember that before flailing your arms and screaming about WoW clones.
