Regardless of the fact that they are both pretty much the same system, they have a different physical apparence, many pieces of different hardware/equipment, the games aren't interchangeable, and they have many of their own games for that matter. It's not like how modern day systems just get released in different regions, the NES was designed specifically to cater to western audiences based off the earlier released Famicom.

In any case weather you agree with me or not on that subject, the fact still remains that because FF1 wasn't released outside of Japan until at least 1990, he wasn't playing it in 1987.
