You must have payed for three months at any point since January 2012. If you have then you are in legacy. Since you cannot pay for anymore months since September 29th/30th, you have to have payed for these 3 months already.

When you start the client and you are at character picking screen ( the area where you pick which character to log into) if you have legacy you will see a Legacy logo in the top left corner. If its not there, that really sucks - and I hope at some point they introduce a loyalty campaign for 2.0 for those who are just good customers.

You had to have registered before the date stated to get Legacy. And as one of the previous posters mentioned, they've been advertising the Legacy campaign for months.
If you and your friend don't want to play 2.0 because you missed Legacy, then well, your loss?
5$ extra isn't that much, unless you're playing a lot of other P2P games as well. And refusing to play a game simply because you don't have the bonuses (which is really just an exclusive chocobo) is pretty silly to be honest.
