There's no real reason to have arbitrary "rites of passage" like Maat. Most of those fights were extremely luck-based anyway. They're not a testament to your ability as a player, nor do they serve as much of a gear-check. Just a bottleneck that forces your LS to farm testimonies.

give me a break, all these ppl who dont want it are the ones who dont want any kind of challenge at all in this game. Maat was alot of fun and so were the limit breaks, i wouldnt say they were road blocks, they were actually a nice way to meet ppl and to get better at ur job. God forbid we have a challenge in a game these days.

I dont think OP was specifically refering to the farming but rather the idea of the fight itself.

Obviously he didnt say at any point "No room for improvement".

I really think players need some solo battles every few levels to stop them from being total noobs to their class, specially higher ranks.

(I am really patient with players, but I wouldn't deny the convenience of not having to teach a Paladin he can raise people)

SE could really go all out and add in total ~1 hour worth of solo play content and little campaigns that get players up to pace over the progression of their class and deliver lore, class rewards at the same time - some real efficiency.

The only one that was random was Thf... which involved having to steal from him which was random. Everything else required you to know your jobs and what to do to outlive/beat him.

There is absolutely no reason to have everything in the game handed to you.

Again, I am not suggesting testimonial RNG.

I am suggesting a solo only test of skill to prove one is familiar enough with thier class/job to progress further.

Well i would prefer having the main job quest npc's as the ones you have to fight instead of Matt, they're already like your masters so wouldnt be weird having a final challenge with them

While I know it may seem like I am against having difficult content in the game, I really am not. Having things like Garuda in the game that most people find challenging is a good thing, just not my thing. But it should be endgame, i.e. it should not be a requirement for additional content except perhaps an even harder version of the same fight.

Having random roadblocks for players who perhaps are not as good as you would like is a good way to drive players away. By the way, by random here I don't mean RNG, I mean why would you have to prove yourself at one particular point to level up instead of at every level for every class.

A fight like this could be optional and I would have no problem with it but for those who want it to be compulsory it seems like they want it at least partly to weed out the people who don't meet their arbitrary definition of being a skilled player and that I will always oppose, both on principle and for the good of the game.

AF quests reward gear, and in many cases, unlocks crucial spells that make the job way more effective. Unlocking level 51-60 is effectively the same idea. Am I wrong?

So much as I hated fighting Maat the first time, I wouldn't mind so much as long as there is no tedious farming of some item or collection of items that rely on the RNG. IF however collected items dropped off particular mobs 100% with the quest active that would be fine. A test of worth doesn't always have to be a fight. FFXI not only had Maat for combat classes each synthesis had a rank up item to be able to progress to the next rank to progress in crafting levels. If there is a test of worth, I think that it shouldn't be limited to just Combat classes, there should be ones for DoL and DoH classes too.
